Arts and Entertainment

March 24, 2023

From: The Dorothy and Charles Mosesian Center for the Arts

A weekend of opera, film, comedy, and the opening of two art exhibitions is ahead of us at Mosesian Arts! Join us for a show on Friday or Saturday (or both!) or a visit to our galleries! Come see, learn, and experience it all at Mosesian Arts!

Performances

This Friday, March 24, Guerilla Opera and Mosesian Arts present the world premiere of I Give You My Home, an operatic film inspired by the life of Bostonian Rose Standish Nichols, a true-life women’s peace party and suffrage activist and professional landscape architect. The film features music and original libretto (in English) by local composer Beth Wiemann and is brought to life by the acclaimed filmmaker Cara Consilvio.

The evening includes introductions from the composer and from staff of the Nichols House Museum, plus a post-screening reception with light refreshments and a cash bar for all ticket holders.

TRANScendent, on Saturday, March 25, is a celebration of comedy and queerness. Ms. Adventure is a trans woman who, with a lot of support from her loved ones, recently came out as a stand-up comedian. She, Cam Ohh, and Danny Riordan are hilarious up-and-coming comedians in Boston who've dealt with the horrors of living outside cisheteronormativity — so you don't have to! Together, they bring all their acquired wisdom in joke form for audiences of all types. The show is TRANScendent, after all!

Other performances this spring include Setu's Evils of Casteism (March 31-April 1), Cindy Scott's NENO (New England Meets New Orleans) (April 5), Jayden Jamison's Kingdom Showcase (April 7), Moonbox Productions' The House of Ramón Iglesia (April 14-30), Post-Meridian Radio Players' Metropolis (April 28-29), and The Briar & Rusty Show: Briar & Rusty in Space!!! (May 18).

Exhibitions

Our next gallery exhibition, Printmaking and Social Engagement, explores traditional printmaking techniques and their relevance today in creating politically and socially engaged works. Running concurrently beginning this Friday, March 24, will be Art in a Silent City, showing the work of Mount Auburn Cemetery Artists in Residence. Join us for a combined opening reception on March 30.

Our next call for art, Flow: Art Inspired by Movement and Sound, invites artists working in any medium to submit works inspired by motion and music. The deadline for submissions is April 3.

Registration is also open for the Third Annual YardArt, a community-wide celebration of creativity and fun in front yards, porches and windows all over Watertown. All residents, families, organizations, clubs, classes, artists, and businesses are invited to create something to be viewed from the street or sidewalk!

Arts Education

Registration continues for a spring term of arts education programs with over two dozen offerings in performing and visual arts classes for children, teens, and adults. A few openings remain in Stages and Studios: April Vacation too!

Registration is also open for Summer Stages & Studios! Summer programming at Mosesian Arts fosters an engaging, welcoming, and creative community where students in grades K-12 can explore new art forms, focus on specific interests, learn from professional teaching artists, and make connections with other participants in a variety of weekly programs grouped by age and arts discipline.
