This week at the Cinema we are opening the first Irish language film nominated for an Academy Award, the outstanding drama, 'The Quiet Girl'. We will also be opening the Cannes Film Festival stand-out, 'Return to Seoul', and continuing our run of the heart-warming new film starring Academy Award Nominated actors Judd Hirsch and Carol Kane, 'iMordecai'.
Special events this week include our Academy Awards Night Fundraiser, a special Film Noir Classics screening of 'Sunset Boulevard', a 90th anniversary screening of 'King Kong', a live folk music concert, and a special Preview Club screening!

The Quiet Girl

Rural Ireland. 1981. Nine-year-old Cait is sent away from her overcrowded, dysfunctional family to live with foster parents for the summer. Quietly struggling at school and at home, she has learned to hide in plain sight from those around her. She blossoms in their care, but in this house where there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one painful truth.

Return to Seoul
Born in South Korea and raised in France by adoptive parents, Frédérique, a.k.a. Freddie (Ji-min Park), is an unyielding 25-year-old in search of answers. Unfamiliar with her native language or the intricacies of Korean culture, she spontaneously travels “home” to connect with her biological parents, and experience the country of her birth. Cambodian-French filmmaker Davy Chou elegantly probes the psychology of a character whose feelings of not belonging have kept her at an emotional distance from nearly everyone in her life.

iMordecai
Starring Judd Hirsch and Carol Kane
Based on a true story, iMordecai stars Oscar nominee and Emmy, Tony & Golden Globe winning actor Judd Hirsch (Taxi, Ordinary People, A Beautiful Mind, Dear John, The Fabelmans) as Mordecai Samel and Academy Award-nominated actress Carol Kane (Hester Street, Scrooged, The Princess Bride, Taxi) as his wife, Fela – both Holocaust survivors from Poland, who are now living in Miami. Their son, Marvin, played by Academy Award-nominated actor Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings, Stranger Things), is an ambitious cigar maker trying to support his own family while still being there for his aging parents. But when Mordecai's ancient flip phone breaks, his son buys him a brand-new iPhone and this sets off a series of unexpected events and magically changes both Mordecai and the people closest to him. Mordecai starts to take lessons from Nina (newcomer Azia Dinea Hale), a young employee of Ultratech. She tutors Mordecai on his new iPhone, opening him up to all kinds of novel experiences and adventures, which makes him feel like a kid again. An uplifting comedy and a love letter to the city of Miami, iMordecai urges us all to live the one life we have to the fullest.

The Flying Sailor:
In 1917, two ships collided in the Halifax Harbour, causing the largest accidental explosion in history. Among the tragic stories of the disaster is the remarkable account of a sailor who, blown skyward from the docks, flew a distance of two kilometres before landing uphill, naked and unharmed. The Flying Sailor is a contemplation of his journey. (Canada, 7 mins)

Cinema Arts Centre Preview Club
Special Advanced Screening Series!
As a member of the Cinema Arts Preview Club, you will attend special advance screenings of major new films prior to their New York release. The club features outstanding films from the festival circuit, always accompanied by discussions with guest speakers. Club members are invited to participate in the discussion. Films and guest speakers are a surprise until the night of the screening; where you will be introduced to a wide range of high-quality, discussion-provoking movies. The club is also a great social experience. Come early and schmooze. Members will fill out comment cards at each film, and the results and choice opinions will be read at the next film. The Cinema Arts Preview Club promises many unforgettable evenings this season and for years to come.
Our host, Isil Bagdadi-Sergio is an indie film producer, programmer, distributor and publicist. In 2001, Isil and her partner Michael Sergio started CAVU Pictures to produce and distribute cutting-edge, critically acclaimed and award-winning independent films. Isil has shepherded dozens of films into the marketplace and continues to champion independent filmmakers, artists and storytellers in every way she can. She frequently serves as a panelist, moderator, mentor and juror at numerous film festivals throughout the year.
