Something Rotten! | November 11-13

Welcome to the Renaissance and the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce, Something Rotten!, a 2015 Broadway hit that was lauded as "the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years." 

Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as "The Bard." When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theater involves singing, dancing, and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self — and all that jazz. 

This Watertown Children's Theatre production features a talented cast of 6th-12th graders.

Flash Art | October 28 - November 16

Just like a flash sale, our Flash Art exhibition and benefit is on for only a short time! 

Nearly 100 artists have donated 100 pieces of art (ceramics, oil paintings, acrylics, watercolors, drawings, prints, artists’ books, photographs, fiber pieces, and collages) and one can be yours for only $100. Flash Art is a great way to begin or add to a collection of original artwork or find a holiday gift! 

Each ticket purchaser will be given a preference sheet to rank their top 20 favorite pieces of art. At the end of the exhibition, a drawing will match each participant to the Flash Art piece that they will ultimately take home. All proceeds will benefit future exhibitions at Mosesian Arts and educational programs like art classes and Watertown Children's Theatre. 

The Flash Art Exhibition will be open to the public through Wednesday, November 16. Works in the exhibition are also viewable on the MCA website. Questions may be directed to Director of Development Jeannette Belcher-Schepis at [email protected].

Mosesian Arts partners with Watertown Veterans' Services to support the Veterans in our lives. From November 2-16, visitors to the arts center are invited to take a dog tag cutout, write about a Veteran they know, and place it on a gallery wall. On Veterans’ Day, Friday, November 11, there will be a brief ceremony at 9:00 AM to commemorate the gallery display — titled “Everyone Knows a Veteran” — and to honor Veterans.

In the Black Box Theater on November 11-13, Stage Ensemble Theater Unit (SETU) presents Steps Around the Fire. In this play by award-winning writer Mahesh Dattani, a housewife unwillingly entangles herself in solving the murder of a member of the Indian Hijra and transgender community. In the process, she uncovers the plight of the most oppressed section of the Indian society whose very existence is shrouded with ancient myths and social prejudices. A panel discussion will be held between performances on Saturday to shed light on the Indian Hijra community.  

Registration for the Winter Session of classes in performing and visual arts for youth and adults begins on November 11 too!

On Tuesday, November 15, support local volunteer-run nonprofit Upstage Lung Cancer for a “feel good” evening titled Laughter Is the Best Medicine! Comedians Jane Condon and Tooky Kavanagh headline. Singers Brian De Lorenzo, Hildy Grossman, Paula Markowicz and Michael Hammond join the emcee, Emmy Award-winning A&E critic Joyce Kulhawik, for an unforgettable evening. 

On Thursday, November 17, short film Unacceptable Risk: Dr. Margaret Kripke on Cancer and the Environment tells the story of a prominent cancer researcher who rethinks her assumptions about the causes of cancer and the true burden of environmentally induced cancers. A panel discussion will follow with filmmaker Cynthia McKeown, Silent Spring Institute senior scientist Dr. Laurel Schaider, and childhood cancer survivor and community advocate Brian Dellascio. This community event is FREE for all. 

On November 18-20, the 10th Annual Boston International Kids Film Festival brings us films for, by, and about kids! Presented by Filmmakers Collaborative, an organization that has been working with independent filmmakers since 1987, the festival includes full length documentaries, animated shorts, and short films appropriate for young children through high schoolers.
