Join Ellen McGauley, Executive Editor of Veranda, along with Jennifer Gracie (Creative Director, Gracie), Virginia Hart (Director and Curator, US State Department's Diplomatic Rooms), and Mark Sikes (Principal, Mark D. Art & The Great Expositions: The Worldwide Web of Taste, 1876 – 1904 will assess the long-term aesthetic impact that World Fairs had on American decorative art and painting during the Gilded Age. With a focus on American (and some Japanese) works displayed in Philadelphia, Paris, Chicago, and St. Louis, the four panelists—all specialists in the art of this period—will trace key developments in the visual culture of a growing nation.

Hazarian, who creates her own beautiful collection of furniture and lighting, shares what inspired the marvelous mix in her 19th-century Paris apartment, which includes her own contemporary pieces and an extraordinary art collection, all within elegant, wood-paneled rooms.

Young Collectors Night

Explore an array of magnificent works of art spanning 5,000 years during this lively evening, indulging in cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and DJ sets. Crosscurrents: Cultural Exchange in the Eighteenth Century

The eighteenth century was a time of great cross-cultural exchange, in Europe and beyond. Artists from England and Northern Europe embarked on their Grand Tours of Italy to steep themselves in the classical monuments and landscapes, while artists from the continent traveled to England to work in its royal court and flourishing academies. This multifaceted cultural exchange was further expanded by artists’ encounters with diverse cultures, in colonies or through exported goods. Join us for a panel discussion between scholars and dealers to discuss the importance of drawing from this period of travel and enrichment.

The Beauty of Restraint: Paris and the Empresses of Design

When Elsie de Wolfe declared, “The cardinal virtue of all beauty is restraint,” she could have been speaking for the tastemakers emerging in Paris around the time of the Art Deco. Among them, there was Sophie Taeuber-Arp and her multifaceted arsenal of talent, Madeleine Vionnet and the couture of the bias-cut, and Suzanne Belperron, who single-handedly made jewelry art. Meanwhile, Jeanne Lanvin and her firm, Lanvin Decoration (with Armand-Albert Rateau), and Jean Dunand in collaboration with the French milliner Madame Agnès (Rittener), produced works for the 1925 exposition. This panel will explore how these accomplished designers influenced one another and spoke the language of modernism that took hold of the world.
