For decades, the Columbus Metropolitan Main Library – originally one of dozens of Carnegie libraries built at the turn of the 20th century – sat adjacent to, but disconnected from, historic Topiary Park in the heart of Downtown Columbus. Surface parking and treatment of the east façade as "back-of-house" had created a barrier between these two historic assets.
In a recent renovation, the Library's east entrance was enhanced with a new 3-story atrium overlooking Topiary Park. The atrium provides additional space for programming and community interaction. A stage for small outdoor performances and a patio extension of the first floor reading room and café create an outdoor campus and connect the Library to the park.
