Karhu-Korhonen Library / Jäkäläpää Cultural Center Jäkäläpää, Lapland, Finland
The former maintenance building of the Jäkäläpää Wilderness Airport, owned by the Lapland Gold Diggers Association and the Civil Aviation Administration, is now known as the Karhu-Korhonen Library and Jäkäläpää Cultural Center. There are books in the library that passers-by can borrow and leave their own books for others.
The aerial site, cleared for gold miners in the early 50's on a plateau near the mountain's ledge, is no longer an official airport, but it is still used. Cautionary signs read: "Runways uneven, larger ground stones marked with white, not recommended for inexperienced."
46th Annual Book Sale
Saturday, August 26, 10:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Sunday, August 27, 10:30 a.m. - sunset. Free books after 2 p.m.!
The 46th Annual Book Sale is just two weeks away and the amazing Bridget Taylor and her team of book sorters are busy in the library basement organizing thousands of books. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to browse through these books, mostly hardcover, donated from Norfolk’s private libraries. Proceeds benefit the Norfolk Library Associates and support the Library’s free cultural programs. We thank everyone who has donated books. If you still have books to donate, please set them aside until after the sale as our basement is chock full! We will be accepting books for next year's sale beginning the week after the sale.
We still need volunteers to assist with all aspects of the sale itself: set-up on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning (strong backs needed!); working under the tents on Saturday or Sunday; cashiers; and dismantling on Monday morning. If you are able to volunteer, please email Liz Hilpman, co-chair of the Book Sale. Thank you for your support!
