Wednesday, September 20 at 7pm - THE TROUBLE BEGINS: Digging up the Past – Then & Now of the Historic Hotel Ampersand with Mikayla Ploof (In-Person and Virtual)
This presentation will follow the rise and fall of the Hotel Ampersand located on the shores of Saranac Lake. The Clemens family visited Saranac Lake in 1901, and while they rented a personal cabin on the lake, they did socialize at the Ampersand Hotel and used it for their address so they could send and receive mail. Mikayla’s presentation will also take a look at what the grounds/resort looks like now.
This is a FREE HYBRID event sponsored by CT Humanities and the Center for Mark Twain Studies in Elmira, New York.

Sunday
WRITE IN MARK TWAIN’S LIBRARY! Sunday, September 24, from 6pm to 9pm ET
Not a writing class, not a writing workshop, just three hours of uninterrupted writing time in Mark Twain’s own library. Join a handful of fellow scribblers to write, reflect, and plot whatever piece of literature you’re working on. The space is quiet, except for the burbling fountain in the nearby conservatory, and infused with Mark Twain’s spirit. Tuesday, September 26 at 7pm ET - Douglas Brunt on THE MYSTERIOUS CASE OF RUDOLF DIESEL: Genius, Power, and Deception on the Eve of World War I with Gareth Russell (Virtual)
On September 29, 1913, the New York Times led with the headline that Rudolf Diesel – multi-millionaire inventor of the diesel engine and international superstar in the scientific community – had disappeared of a passenger ship crossing from Belgium to England and was presumed dead. Since Diesel’s disappearance, the world has assumed one of three outcomes: there was an accident, he committed suicide, or he was murdered, with high profile players such as Kaiser Wilhelm and John D. Rockefeller in the line of accusation.
Perfect for fans of Erik Larson, New York Times bestselling author and historian Douglas Brunt expertly weaves history with intrigue while presenting a new theory on Diesel’s disappearance.
