MTH&M Executive Director Pieter Roos Announces Retirement
After serving six years as executive director of The Mark Twain House & Museum, Pieter Roos has announced his retirement effective December 31, 2023.

Pieter’s tenure was marked by a substantial rebuilding of the organization which began in 2017. The campus has seen significant improvements to lighting, landscaping, the museum building, and the historic structures. He recruited new staff and corrected infrastructure problems whose accumulation over the previous fifteen years represented a significant challenge.

In this period, the Twain House & Museum saw a blossoming of programming and, post-Covid, a return to being a vibrant organization that serves supporters nationally and the greater Hartford community. Much of Pieter’s work took place as he led the organization through a global pandemic, positioning the museum for its return to a post pandemic world.

Pieter is sad to be going, saying, “The Twain House is one of Connecticut’s great landmarks and a destination for people from around the country and around the world. It has been a privilege to lead the museum during this time. I wish it all the best in its next chapter.”

Pieter intends to focus his energies on his family, his many hobbies and a new consulting practice that he has started.

Michael L. Campbell, the Chief Operating and Financial Officer of the Mark Twain House, was appointed Interim Executive Director in early December.

Hans Miller, Chair of the Board of Trustees, said “On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to thank Pieter for his leadership of the Mark Twain House during the last six years and in particular for the wonderful condition of the historic home of Mark Twain.”

The Board of the Mark Twain House intends to conduct a search for its next Executive Director, in the coming year. Mr. Miller added: “We thank Michael for his willingness to serve as our Interim Executive Director during the important 2024 transition period.”   Michael is an experienced leader with a passion for the Clemens family, the works of Mark Twain and deep familiarity with our operations.
