Statement from Chairman Joe Powers on President Biden's Cancer Diagnosis:'A Time for Compassion, Not Conspiracy'

Government and Politics

May 18, 2025

As the husband of a cancer survivor and the son of a father who overcame prostate cancer, I understand how quickly and painfully cancer can upend a life. My thoughts and prayers are with President Biden and the entire Biden family during this deeply personal and challenging time.

Some may view the timing of this diagnosis-shortly after declaring he was healthy enough to run for another term-as suspicious. While I understand the skepticism in today’s political climate, I urge restraint.

“The timing may raise questions, but cancer doesn’t wait for election cycles,” said Powers continued “Let’s lead with compassion, not cynicism. I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, because I’ve seen firsthand how fast cancer can rear its ugly head.”

This is a moment to rise above partisanship. I sincerely wish President Biden a full and speedy recovery, and strength for his family as they navigate the road ahead.
