We Are Ramping Up To Our 95th Season

Summer is nearing its end, but our season is only just beginning. We welcome our 10th Music Director, John Young Shik Concklin, as we kick off our fall programming with a month full of fun and exciting concerts!

This upcoming season promises to be an unforgettable journey through the world of live music, featuring captivating performances, renowned artists, and a diverse selection of musical masterpieces. As we prepare to set sail on this exciting season, here's a preview of what's in store for the upcoming months:

From The New World - 95th Season Premiere 
Date: September 16, 2023 | 7PM
Venue: Twichell Auditorium at Converse University

Your Spartanburg Philharmonic opens its monumental 95th Season with the brave and bold Symphony From the New World under the baton of our new Music Director, John Young Shik Concklin.

Dvo?ák's Symphony no. 9, opus 95 is filled with dancing Czech rhythms and familiar American folk melodies.  The concert will open with a newly commissioned work by Spartanburg’s own Peter B. Kay followed by Xavier Foley’s Soul Bass, an extraordinary work for solo double bass and orchestra!

Espresso no.1: Serioso
Date: September 29, 2023 
Happy Hour: 5:30-6:30 PM | Concert: 6:30-7:30PM
Venue: Chapman Cultural Center

A strong, robust music brew for the opening of our 95th season, this concert will feature Beethoven’s String Quartet no. 11, Op. 95 “Serioso”, Saint-Saëns's Fantaisie for solo harp, Op. 95, and many more.  Enjoy a mixture of "serious" and lighthearted music from classical to contemporary composers combining the traditions of the string quartet with the beauty of the harp.

Bluegrass Spartanburg - Dan Tyminski Band
Date: October 6, 2023 | 8PM
Venue: Chapman Cultual Center

Throughout his 30+ year career, Dan Tyminski has left his mark in every corner of modern music. You know his voice from  George Clooney's famous performance of the Stanley Brother’s Classic song, “I’m A Man of Constant Sorrow" - now hear him live.

Peter B. Kay

Peter B. Kay is a composer who combines classical traditions with contemporary techniques and modern folk & pop influences resulting in a voice that is both fresh and familiar. Composer-in-Residence for the Spartanburg Philharmonic, Peter also currently serves as the Philharmonic's General Manager and Graphic Designer.  He has written and arranged several works for the Philharmonic including Phoenix (Cathedral) (2019), commemorating the reopening of Twichell Auditorium at Converse University, Dissent (Notorious) (2021), inspired by the Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg, to be Determined (2021), celebrating the return to live music after the pandemic, his Christmas Suite for Chamber Orchestra (2020), and scores for several silent movies which were performed live alongside showings of the classic films.

Come hear Peter's ode to our 95th Season with his new, never-before-heard triumphant piece, Fanfareat our 95th Season Premiere on Sept. 16th. As the name suggests, the piece is designed to showcase the power of the symphony, celebrating this wonderful new chapter in our orchestra’s lifetime.
