ESPRESSO NO.2: JAZZ NIGHT
JONATHAN SCALES FOURCHESTRA

Nov. 15 at Chapman Cultural Center

Jonathan Scales' steelpans blaze at the Aspen Ideas Festival

The Aspen Ideas Festival campus spans 40 acres and is filled with art installations, event venues, grassy fields and picturesque gardens. Sounds perfect, right? But when we tried to find a place to record Jonathan Scales’ steelpans, the landscape actually presented a challenge.

Check out NPR Music's Field Recordings session from this year's Aspen Ideas Festival ahead of our Espresso Series concert this month on Nov. 15th

Calling All Spartanburg Student Writers: Enter “The Moons” Competition!

The Spartanburg Philharmonic is excited to launch “The Moons” writing competition, a special opportunity exclusively for Spartanburg County K-12 students to share their creative talent! As part of our April 26th concert, The Planets, this competition invites young writers to introduce the audience to one of five selected moons in our solar system (more info in link below) —through the lens of Greek mythology and imaginative storytelling.

Submission Guidelines:

We’re looking for narratives, poems, or short stories that can be read aloud in 2 minutes or less. Entries should be between 250-350 words and creatively introduce a chosen moon and its Greek mythological namesake. Imagine sparking a sense of wonder for the audience and inspiring the music that Dr. Kay will compose to bring these celestial stories to life.

How to Enter:

  • Eligibility: Open to all K-12 students attending a Spartanburg County school.
  • Deadline: Submit your piece by November 19, 2024.
  • Submission Link: Visit The Moons Competition page for all the details and to submit your entry.

This is a unique chance for young writers to shine on stage, with their words guiding the music that will fill the concert hall. Ready to share your voice and imagination with Spartanburg?
