About You:
We’re looking for San Diego-based artists committed to being part of the Space 4 Art community. The current tenants have been here for 15 years, and we’re excited to find the next generation of artists ready to engage. Preference will be given to artists with a community-based practice, regardless of whether art is their main source of income.
To apply, please fill out a studio application. Once you’ve applied, please email Rio informing her of your interest and application.
Our arts education workshops have kicked off the year with great momentum, establishing two exciting new school partnerships and offering students the chance to explore watercolor, drawing, and welding.
In January, Sheena Rae Dowling, S4A’s newest teaching artist, combined watercolor and drawing with literature for middle school students at Perkins K-8. To better understand the plays and poems they were studying, Sheena had students trace symbols from the texts onto parchment paper using charcoal, and then bring them to life with colored pencils. Others crafted their own poetry by cutting words from the script and layering them over watercolor feathers they had painted, creating their own poems.
In February, high school students from New Dawn and Marcy visited Space 4 Art for an introduction to welding with tenant artist Jenna Leathers. In addition to learning basic welding techniques, students toured the S4A space and gained insight into our mission. Some students expressed a desire to join a community like ours and pursue a future as an artist-welder like Jenna.
San Diego Art Directory
Our local art scene
Exciting news! Last month, S4A tenants got a first look at an exciting new initiative. Galina Marcus, driven by a passion to challenge the perception that San Diego lacks culture, created an online hub to highlight the city's thriving arts scene. Motivated by a desire to prove that San Diego is a vibrant artistic hub, she launched the San Diego Art Directory in September 2023. This free, unlimited resource allows users to not only list their own events but also post on behalf of other organizations or artists. Galina encourages artists to go beyond event listings and also feature their studios or businesses, which will remain on the site permanently. The directory includes a variety of listings—open calls, gallery events, workshops, and more—and is designed to serve as a comprehensive guide for the San Diego arts community.
Where Artists of San Diego Are Seen:
In addition, Galina has launched the San Diego Artists Network, a subscription-based platform akin to LinkedIn for the local arts community. For a low annual fee, artists can showcase their portfolios, connect with peers, and access a job board dedicated to helping artists get paid for their work. The initiative aims to create a unified, accessible network for artists of all disciplines. These platforms will thrive through active participation, and we encourage all artists to contribute and help build this collaborative effort to strengthen San Diego's arts community.
