Sidewalk Salon: TV Writing Fellowship Basics
January 10 | Free | Zoom | 7PM
Our first Salon of 2023 will be an overview of the TV writing fellowship application process. You'll walk away with an understanding of the requirements and deadlines of each program as well as an understanding of what makes a strong application, how you can decide which programs are right for you, and where you can turn for additional resources.
Our speaker is Troy Kelly, 2018 winner of Sidewrite, Sidewalk's screenwriting competition. Troy Kelly is a gay forensic psychologist turned TV writer. He is a fellow of the 2022-2023 Warner Bros.' Writers' Workshop. He writes dark, emotionally-driven dramas about flawed protagonists with unresolved traumas and complicated relationships confronting impossible odds and doing whatever it takes to survive. His passions include training his rescue dog Lucky to be a therapy dog and curating his collection of over 10,000 comic books.
THIS SALON IS VIRTUAL AND WILL BE HELD ON ZOOM.

Book: Room: A Novel by Emma Donoghue
"Emma Donoghue's writing is superb alchemy, changing innocence into horror and horror into tenderness. Room is a book to read in one sitting. When it's over you look up: the world looks the same but you are somehow different and that feeling lingers for days."?Audrey Niffenegger, author of The Time Traveler's Wife
Film: Room (2015, dir. Lenny Abrahamson)
"With visual and psychological precision, Abrahamson brilliantly evokes the experience of living outside of everyday reality. " - St. Louis Dispatch

Home From School Screening + Post-Film Discussion
with co-producer Sophie Barksdale
February 15 | $15 | 7PM
Sidewalk Film Center + Cinema is proud to be a screening venue for the 2022 Southern Circuit. Since Southern Circuit’s inception in 1975, hundreds of filmmakers have toured, sharing their work and perspective with over one hundred Screening Partner communities throughout South Arts’ nine-state region (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee). Southern Circuit is made possible through a partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
Home From School: The Children of Carlisle: “Kill the Indian in him, and save the man” was the guiding principle of the U.S. government-run Indian boarding school system starting in the late 19th-Century. The program removed tens of thousands of Native American children from their tribal homelands, and through brutal assimilation tactics, stripped them of their languages, traditions, and culture. The students were forced through a military-style, remedial education. Most children returned emotionally scarred, culturally unrooted with trauma that has echoed down the generations. Many students never returned home, having died at the schools. Home From School: The Children of Carlisle dives into history of the flagship federal boarding school, Carlisle Indian Industrial School, and follows the modern-day journey of the Northern Arapaho Tribe as they seek to bring home the remains of three children who died at Carlisle over 100 years ago. To move forward they need to heal from the past, and in doing so they forge the way for other tribes to follow. Released in 2021, Home From School is a co-production of Caldera Productions and Vision Maker Media and nationally broadcasts on the PBS series Independent Lens. It was nominated for a 2022 Heartland EMMY award for Best Documentary in Cultural Programs and was awarded the 2022 Western Heritage Award for Outstanding Documentary. Home From School has been an Official Selection at 18 film festivals and has won top juried prizes at six festivals.
We are excited to welcome co-producer Sophie Barksdale to our post film discussion!
