“Science Café - Green Gold: Exploring the Health Benefits and Renewable Energy Potential of Microalgae and Plant-Derived Natural Products,” at the Museum of Nature & Science and Sigma Xi

The Museum of Nature & Science and Sigma Xi present “Science Café – Green Gold: Exploring the Health Benefits and Renewable Energy Potential of Microalgae and Plant-Derived Natural Products,” with guest speaker F. Omar Holguin, Ph.D. Dr. Holguin joins us from the NMSU Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences Tuesday, April 18 at 5:30pm. “Science Café” is free and open to the public.

Microalgae and guayule are two natural resources that offer potential applications in various industries. Microalgae are a rich source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) with significant health benefits and can also be used to produce renewable liquid transportation fuel. Guayule, a desert shrub, is a source of natural rubber with applications in various industries such as the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and industrial sectors. The production of biofuels from microalgae and natural rubber from guayule is environmentally friendly and sustainable. By harnessing the unique properties of these natural resources, we can create a range of innovative and eco-friendly products that benefit both human health and the environment.

Dr. F. Omar Holguin is an associate professor in NMSU's Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences. His research area primarily centers on the validation of co-products derived from renewable feedstocks.
