Our 2023-24 Season begins this weekend with "Very First Concerts" at the San Francisco Public Library, the Menlo Park Library and our yearly collaboration at the Crowden Community Music Center. A blend of engaging performances and interactive educational activities, this series is a treat for the whole family, where you can be up and close with our SFCO musicians and their instruments. And then on to our opening MainStage concerts, which feature three pieces of incredible vibrancy and depth of meaning. Florence Price's “Andante Moderato” highlights the distinctive sounds and strength of African American Spirituals. Shostakovich’s “Chamber Symphony” comes from his poignant and dynamic 8th String Quartet which was dedicated to the victims of fascism and World War II. The program culminates with Mendelssohn’s vibrant “Scottish” symphony, depicting ancient Scottish ruins and their legends, enveloped by the wild landscapes of Scotland.
