With the Legislative Session Ending Today, Republicans Still Don’t Have A Finished Budget

Des Moines - The legislative session is scheduled to end today. Republicans still haven’t passed a state budget because they can’t figure out how to get themselves out of an economic mess that they created.

“It shouldn’t have been a surprise to the Speaker that I went with a lower [budget] amount. I mean, I said it, you know, I’m really concerned about the revenue that’s coming offline and the environment we’re in right now,” Kim Reynolds told KCRG.

In other words - Reynolds is worried about cleaning up a mess she created. Under Republican leadership, Iowa has slipped to 49th in the country for economic growth and 48th in personal income growth.

Because of Republicans’ worries over the economy they created, they will have to extend the legislative session to fix this budget mess. Iowa needs competent leadership, something the Republicans, even with a supermajority, seem incapable of achieving.

“If Iowans weren’t already worried about their financial situation, they should be now after watching the dysfunction at the state legislature. Even with control of Iowa’s House, Senate, and Governor’s Office, Republicans are unable to fix the economic mess that they created,” said IDP Chair Rita Hart. “How are Iowans supposed to have confidence when planning for the future when Republican leadership is squandering Iowa’s economic security?”
