Arts and Entertainment

January 19, 2023

From: Provincetown Art Association And Museum

Hello writers, editors, publishers, and other members of the press,

Below you'll find a preview of PAAM's 2023 Summer Exhibition Program, which we hope will support you in planning your summer coverage. While exhibition dates have been confirmed with curators and artists, at this point in the year it is still possible that we'll need to make some last-minute changes to the schedule (although we hope not to). You'll also notice that key pieces of information, such as exhibition titles and comprehensive marketing images, are not included--our process of finalizing these details begins in earnest now. A PDF of the preview can be found here.

You can expect a more complete overview of our exhibitions from me in about two months, but in the meantime please don't hesitate to be in touch. I'm most easily reached by email ([email protected]) and from there am always happy to arrange a time to chat by phone or in-person.

Thanks, and here's to another great year!

Summer Exhibitions Preview

Sky Power
Curated by Christine McCarthy
On view May 5 – June 25, 2023
Opening reception: Friday, May 19, 6 PM

Sky Power is a contemporary painter based in Provincetown. Her “emotion-driven, colorful abstractions and dreamscapes” are driven by strong composition and color-as-form, created in the language of abstraction. Influenced by three Hans Hofmann students–Paul Resika, Selina Trieff, and Robert Henry–Power’s paintings seek to show the connection between representational and abstract art through composition.

Alicia Henry
Curated by Marian Roth and Ngina Lythcott
On view May 12 – July 9, 2023
Opening reception: Friday, May 19, 6 PM

Alicia Henry is a contemporary multi-media artist, who was a fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in 1993 before going on to exhibit at the Ewa Nogiec Gallery in Provincetown. Henry’s work is concerned with the body, and how unseen relationships (race, gender, class) can form identity. Using various materials, including dye, acrylic, fabric, thread and paper, Henry depicts the human figure in tension between isolation and connection, ultimately seeking to convey a shared humanity.

The 2022 Recipients of the Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Foundation Grant

Curated by Christine McCarthy and Milisa Moses

On view May 19- June 19, 2023

Opening reception: Friday, May 19, 6 PM

The Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Grant is awarded annually to under-recognized American painters over the age of 45 who demonstrate financial need.

The mission of this grant is to promote public awareness of and a commitment

to American art, and to encourage interest in artists who lack adequate recognition.

Henry Rothman
Curated by Samuel Tager and Paul Resika
On view June 2 – July 23, 2023
Opening reception: Friday, June 9, 6 PM

This exhibition will be a retrospective of collages by Henry Rothman (1910-1990). In his long career as an artist, Rothman created hundreds of collages in his studios in New York City and Provincetown, where he spent 40 summers living on the waterfront. Having studied in the late 1940s with Hans Hofmann, Rothman’s collages reflect Hofmann’s theory that abstract art has its origins in nature; his work follows the story of decomposition in both the natural and urban landscapes.

Mel Leipzig
Curated by Craig Bloodgood, Contemporary Curator at The Art Complex Museum, Duxbury MA
On view June 9 – July 23, 2023
Opening reception: Friday, June 9, 6 PM

Mel Leipzig is a contemporary artist known for his portraits featuring American artists in their studios, including notable Cape Cod artists such as Carmen Cicero, Selina Trieff, Robert Henry, and Chip and Jean Fogg-Brock. His portraits are rendered with just four colors and black, resulting in rich and dramatic scenes. This exhibition will feature these portraits alongside the work of the subjects themselves to create an atmosphere of connection and intimacy.

Jane Kogan
Curated by Vicky Tomayko
On view June 30 – August 20, 2023
Opening reception: Friday, June 30, 6 PM

Jane Kogan is a contemporary artist who has been based in Provincetown since 1968 when she was awarded a fellowship at the Fine Arts Work Center. This exhibition will examine two major bodies of her work: her Provincetown paintings, which depict many scenes and buildings from “old” Provincetown, and selections of her “Amazons” series, large paintings created on the cusp of the Feminist Liberation Movement, exploring women in iconic scenes and themes.

Mira Schor
Curated by Breon Dunigan
On view July 14 – September 17, 2023
Opening reception: Friday, July 14, 6 PM

Mira Schor is a contemporary artist, writer, teacher, and feminist based in New York City and Provincetown, where she has been creating art for more than 40 years. This exhibition will feature figurative paintings and drawings done in Provincetown and explore specific periods of time within her career.

Adelaide Newhall
Curated by Richard Neal and Robert Finger
On view September 15 – November 26, 2023
Opening reception: Friday, September 15, 6 PM

Adelaide May Newhall (1884-1960) was a landscape and portrait painter who worked in the tradition of the Cape Cod School of Art, where she was a student of founder Charles Hawthorne. Newhall’s work, described by the curator as “bold and sculptural”, depicts a Cape Cod setting that is rural and rustic. Her Wellfleet cottage and its surroundings provided the backdrop for oil paintings, through which we can observe a Cape Cod of an earlier era.

Sal Del Deo
Curated by Christine McCarthy
On view September 29 –November 26, 2023
Opening reception: Friday, October 7, 6 PM

Sal Del Deo is a contemporary painter whose 75-year career intersected with some of the most defining elements of Provincetown: the art colony, the fishing community, his two restaurants bearing his name, the dunes. This exhibition will be a celebration of Del Deo’s life and artistic career, featuring portraits, studio work, and the Italian landscapes celebrating his heritage, Provincetown landscapes, and reaffirm his status as a significant contributor to the legacy of the Provincetown Art Colony and to American art history.
