At Home with George: Washington’s Morristown Winter, 1779–1780 is On View through July 30

Morristown, NJ -- 2023 marks the 90th anniversary of the establishment of Morristown National Historical Park as the first historical park in the National Park Service. To celebrate this anniversary, the Morristown National Historical Park commissioned the photo-artist Xiomáro (SEE-oh-MAH-ro) to document the architecture of the Ford Mansion and the Jockey Hollow site “to reintroduce the park to the rapidly changing global and local communities it serves in the 21st-century.” The exhibition,?At Home with George: Washington’s Morristown Winter, 1779–1780, features the artist’s photography with its innovative use of natural light and his unique perspective of historical sites. Through his photography, Xiomáro documents areas of the buildings typically unseen by the public, resulting in photographs that capture the Ford Mansion’s dual role as domestic space and Washington’s 1779-1780 Revolutionary War headquarters. The exhibition will be on view through July 30, 2023 at the Morris Museum.

Xiomáro (Xio) is an internationally exhibited artist and curator from New York specializing in photographing National Parks and other iconic sites to raise awareness of history and culture. His photography uses natural light to capture the experience of living in the 1700s, where interior spaces were often dimly lit. As if walking into a dark room, the viewer’s eyesight must adjust to see all the details whether it be antique household items or military cots used during the American Revolutionary War. The exhibition includes images shot from unique vantage points that depict the Ford Mansion’s beautiful interior spaces as well as the rustic huts and architecture from Jockey Hollow.

Xio's work has been widely exhibited at institutions such as Harvard University and the Long Island Museum, among many others. He is the author of?Weir Farm National Historic Site which features his photographs of Connecticut's first national park, which was commemorated on the 2020 U.S. quarter. The foreword was written by Senator Joseph I. Lieberman and the book was released by Arcadia Publishing. Since 2012, Xio has served as the Visiting Artist at Weir Farm where he began as an Artist-in-Residence.

As a speaker and teacher, Xio has reached thousands of artists, historians, educators, and environmentalists. He was a speaker at the Appalachian Mountain Club's 140th Annual Summit and he has presented talks, lectures, and panel discussions at museums, galleries, conferences, universities, camera/photography clubs, and high schools. His work has been covered by?The New York Times,?The Boston Globe,?CBS Eyewitness News,?ABC News,?NJ PBS,?News 12,?Newsday,?The Huffington Post, and Fine Art Connoisseur
