ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN: Transforming Paper to Sculpture at the Museum of Art
Join us for a unique exhibition at the Museum of Art, ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN: Transforming Paper to Sculpture, featuring innovative artwork of Santa Fe artists Kevin and Jennifer Box. Through a laborious process using the lost-wax technique, Kevin Box transforms both large- and small-scale paper origami pieces into metal sculptures. The exhibition is on view June 2 through September 23, 2023. There will be an opening reception on Friday, June 2 from 5-8pm. The artists Kevin and Jennifer Box and origami master Robert J. Lang will be in attendance and will offer a gallery tour at 6pm.

The Las Cruces Museum of Art is excited to host this dynamic and unusual installation, which offers residents of the south borderland an opportunity to view this unique artwork beyond its permanent home in Cerrillos, New Mexico. It will mark the first time ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN has been offered in the region.

Santa Fe artists Kevin and Jennifer Box created ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN in 2013, and in 2014 had their first exhibition at the Santa Fe Botanical Garden. Since then, some 3 million visitors in botanical gardens and museums throughout the United States have experienced their metal sculptures. They collaborate with other nationally and internationally known origami artists and through these collaborations push the boundaries of what origami and metal can be.

The exhibition features an interactive station where guests can fold butterflies and either take them home or leave them to be included in an installation that will grow over the course of the exhibition. Additionally, a wide range of educational programs are planned, including origami folding events, a lecture about the history of origami, printmaking using origami designs, and a celebration of International Day of Peace using origami pieces.

The museum is located at 491 N. Main St. and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 4:30pm and Saturday 9am to 4:30pm. There is no admission fee. The museum is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1 Stop 1. For additional information, visit the website at https://www.lascruces.gov/museums or call (575)541-2137.
