Upcoming Artist Talks
Artist Talk: Lillian Bayley Hoover
In-person at the Museum -- 3550 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, VA 22201
Saturday / March 16 / 4-5pm
Free. No registration required.
Join artist Lillian Bayley Hoover for an in-person conversation about her solo exhibition Hitched to Everything Else, currently on view at MoCA Arlington.
In Hitched to Everything Else, Lillian Bayley Hoover depicts spaces where human infrastructure interrupts or collides with the natural environment. The artist highlights and challenges humans’ conflicted relationship to nature, or, as she explains it, all the ways “we are of nature but proceed as if we are apart from it.” Hoover’s complex landscapes invite viewers to confront this untenable approach, pointing to the threat it poses both to our own existence and to the natural world we treat as if it is distinct from human life.
At the Innovation Studio + Store
Thank you Adam Henry...
Inaugural Artist-in-Residence: Adam Henry
Over the last six weeks, Adam Henry and his apprentice son, Adam, shared their talent and artwork with the public at our Innovation Studio + Store at Amazon's HQ2 in National Landing!
Adam helped launch our Innovation Studio with a golden ticket contest and continued to connect with visitors by offering custom portraits and generously giving advice to artists of all ages.
During his 6-week residency, Adam also constructed the artwork "LIB" using primarily cardboard, rope, and push pins.
Although, Adam's residency is concluding, he is teaching a spring art class for adults at the Innovation Studio!
...And welcome to Chris Combs!
Next Artist-in-Residence: Chris Combs
We are excited to announce that the second artist-in-residence at the Innovation Studio + Store is Chris Combs!
Chris Combs is an artist based in Washington, DC and Mount Rainier, Maryland whose sculptural artworks both incorporate and question technologies.
Chris is a three-time recipient of the DC CAH Arts and Humanities Fellowship program and was shortlisted for the 2021 Aesthetica Art Prize. He is a graduate of the Corcoran College of Art + Design and was a photo editor for National Geographic.
You can connect with Chris and his work at our Innovation Studio + Store beginning Tuesday, March 12!
New exhibition on view at the museum
February 22 – May 26, 2024
Meyer and Smith Galleries, Main Level
Featured Artists: Lavett Ballard, Amber Robles-Gordon, and Evita Tezeno
Curated by Dr. Lauren Davidson
Solace and Sisterhood brings together the work of three artists of African descent who are friends and “sisters”: Lavett Ballard, Amber Robles-Gordon, and Evita Tezeno. Through their artwork, viewers are given an intimate look into their experiences and their sisterhood, which has developed over several years. By digging deeply into historical and contemporary perspectives on African American life, exploring traditions in the African diasporic community, or remixing commonly known objects, these artists span media and aesthetics. They tackle topics of self-identity, Black female beauty, and spiritual discovery. They resist single affiliations and simple answers to difficult questions. All the while, they maintain deep bonds that now transcend friendship. They are now sisters.
