Fundamentals of Painting (Ages 14-18)
Tuesday | April 18 - June 6 | 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM
8 sessions | Instructor: Emily Sullivan
Put color theory and blending techniques into practice in this essential course for beginning and experienced painters! Color, composition, space, and texture will be emphasized throughout this course as projects move from representational to abstract. After learning the fundamentals of painting, students will be encouraged to experiment as they develop their own artistic voice.
Human Anatomy: Hands & Feet (Ages 18+)
Tuesdays, 6:30-8:30pm, April 18 - May 9
4 sessions | Instructor: Cecilia Kim
This class is a 4-week workshop focused on mastering hands and feet! No more avoidance and fear of anatomy. These features can really define the character and finish of the figure. Together we will overcome the challenge of drawing the hands and feet in the figure, using anatomical studies as a guide. We will represent the hands and feet with contour and shading using graphite and charcoal.
Mixed Media Expressions (Ages 18+)
Fridays, 10:00-12:00pm, May 5 - June 9
8 sessions | Instructor: Molly McCracken
In this class, participants will explore a variety of collage and mixed media techniques through playful process oriented projects. Come with an open mind and a willingness to try different ways of combining paper, paint, pencils, images, shapes, colors and lines. We will have a lot of fun and banish stress while we work through the different processes to create unique works of art that you will love!
One Day Workshops
Intuitive Sketch Journal Workshop
Sunday, 2:00-4:30pm, April 23 Instructor: Negar Ahkami
The Intuitive Sketch Diary is your own space to connect with your own intuition, emotions, ideas, visual discoveries and obsessions. In this workshop, resident artist Negar Ahkami will introduce the concept of treating a small, bound sketchbook as a visual diary and internal travelog, by sharing how this practice has been a vital part of her artistic process. With your own small, bound sketchbook (included in the cost of this workshop), and in a judgement-free environment that embraces imperfection, we will do a series of drawing prompts to connect with flow and to get you started on your new habit! This workshop is for all levels, whether you are a beginner, or an experienced artist experiencing block or hoping to explore your own content or style.
Grid Pattern Meditation Workshop
Sunday, 2:00-4:00pm, April 23 Instructor: Anjelika Deogirikar Grossman
In this workshop, participants will explore using a grid to create geometric patterns. Drawing inspiration from weaving, participants will work row by row creating a sense of mediation and flow, using the negative and positive space to create a pattern. Starting with one color, participants will also explore the impact of water on the saturation of watercolor paint. All skill levels are welcome.
Love Letter to Color Workshop (Ages 18+)
Sunday, 11:00am - 1:30pm, May 7 Instructor: Rebecca Rivas-Rogers
Join resident artist Rebecca Rivas Rogers while we walk, observe nature and mix color in "Love Letter to a Color." In this workshop, designed for novices and experienced artists alike, Rivas Rogers invites participants to partake in the process the artist underwent to create her current solo exhibition "Grey View", on show here at MoCA Arlington. Participants will be asked to pick their favorite color and find it in nature during an hour-long excursion in the neighborhood around MoCA. Afterwards participants will be invited to record their observations in acrylic paint while learning to mix the various iterations of the color.
Plein Air Gouache Painting Workshop (Ages 18+)
Sunday, 12:30 pm-3:30 pm, May 21 Instructor: Marisa Stratton
In this workshop, students will explore nature through gouache painting or "opaque watercolor". We will explore the history of gouache as a medium and its traditional applications. Students will have the choice to work on landscape, floral, and/or botanical illustrations.
