Exhibitions include work by Columbia Pike Documentary Project, two solo exhibitions by Mid-Atlantic artists, a group exhibition of Arlington's resident artists, and the presentation of new work created as part of the Arlington Cultural Affairs IMPACT Arts Residency

Arlington, VA – Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington is proud to announce its summer exhibitions, opening on May 31, 2023. Art After Hours, an opening celebration, will take place on Friday June 2 from 5pm-8pm. Between two group exhibitions and three solo projects, work by 23 contemporary artists will be on view at the Museum this summer, with nearly all of the work created by artists working in the DC metro area and the Mid-Atlantic.

On the main floor and in the Jenkins Community Gallery, MoCA presents A World in a Zip Code: Columbia Pike Documentary Project. The exhibition includes photographs, video, and oral history by the Columbia Pike Documentary Project, a team of photographers and storytellers whose work captures the evolving life of Arlington County's historic Columbia Pike corridor. The exhibition will include photography and oral history by Lara Ajami, Paula Endo, Moises Gomez, Aleksandra Lagkueva, Sushmita Mazumdar, Xang Mimi Ho, Dewey Tron, and Lloyd Wolf. The exhibition coincides with the release of The Road Ahead, Columbia Pike Documentary Project's most recent book, which includes photographs and oral history from the past year. 

The Truland and Experimental Galleries will feature solo exhibitions by artists Christina P. Day and Steve Wanna. Christina P. Day: Depth Cue will include a new architectural installation and several new linoleum collage works by the artist, who uses form and found material as repositories for both time and lived experience. An interactive soundscape and light installation, Steve Wanna: A Vast Expanse is inspired by the phenomenon known as the event horizon, the term that describes the threshold between the singularity of the black hole and the surrounding universe. 

Steve Wanna: A Vast Expanse and Christina P. Day: Depth Cue are the first of eight solo exhibitions that will take place as part of MoCA Arlington's SOLOS 23-24, a series of solo exhibitions by artists based in the Mid-Atlantic. The exhibitions were selected from an open call for proposals by a jury that included artist Nekisha Durrett, Betsy Johnson, assistant curator, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and Jova Lynna, director, Temple Contemporary, Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University.

In the Wyatt Resident Artists Gallery, MoCA Arlington presents Hot Goss, featuring work by all twelve of the Museum's resident artists: Negar Ahkami, Joey Enríquez, Emily Fussner, Sarah Hardesty, Stephanie Lane, Marissa Long, Lex Marie, Ryan McCoy, Olivia Tripp Morrow, Rebecca Rivas Rogers, Marisa Stratton, and Bahar Yürüko?lu. The exhibition posits that no artist works within a vacuum and that creative ideas get swapped and reinterpreted just like pieces of juicy gossip. Sometimes irreverent, often thought-provoking, and always eye-catching, the works in Hot Goss share a willingness to experiment with ideas and break the rules. 

Lastly, MoCA Arlington will also present Cut to the New: A Columbia Hills convergence of textiles and stories by artist Asa Jackson. The work, a textile piece and accompanying video, is the culmination of Jackson's participation in the IMPACT Arts Residency. Through a partnership between Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington, Arlington Cultural Affairs, and Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing (APAH), the IMPACT Arts Residency engaged the diverse residents of two affordable housing communities located on Columbia Pike through a series of workshops and gatherings, resulting in the creation of this work of art by Jackson. The work will be displayed at MoCA Arlington for the summer before it is permanently installed in the community where the workshops took place. The IMPACT Arts Residency and the presentation of Jackson's work are supported in part by Arlington County through the Arlington Cultural Affairs Division of Arlington Economic Development, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing.

MoCA Arlington celebrates the opening of our summer exhibitions. Exhibiting artists will be in attendance and MoCA Arlington Resident Artists will also open their studios to the public. The event is free and open to the public. Additional public programs taking place in conjunction with the exhibitions will be announced soon.
