From: The Dorothy and Charles Mosesian Center for the Arts

At Mosesian Arts, education is one of the centerpieces of our programming! Read about some highlights in our spring classes, and then scroll down to see what’s currently on our stages and in our galleries! Come see, learn, and experience it all at Mosesian Arts!

IN OUR CLASSROOMS

Whether you’re looking for beginning, intermediate or advanced classes for children, teens, or adults, MCA offers a variety of affordable educational options. We provide a process-based approach to exploring the arts that guides students towards developing both art skills and techniques as well as life skills such as collaboration, creativity, and empathy.

Performing arts educational programs for youth are branded as Watertown Children’s Theatre, which was founded in 1983 and celebrates its 40th anniversary this year! Youth performance arts classes include acting, storytelling, playmaking, and technical theater. There are plenty of opportunities to perform on stage too. (The last of this season's shows is already in rehearsal, but watch for our 2023-24 WCT season to be announced in June!) For adults, watch for new opportunities coming in voice classes and improv.

In our visual arts classrooms this spring, youth can learn and practice painting or drawing – including cartooning! – or take mixed media classes in themes such as STEAM or Animal Homes and Habitats. Adult painting classes include acrylic and watercolor, and a variety of printmaking classes are offered. We also have popular adult classes in mixed media, including Personal Explorations and Visual Narratives (which is funded for our Aging Creatively initiative by Marshall Home Fund).

Some classes begin this week, but registration is still open! Registration is also still available for Stages & Studios: April Vacation for students in grades K-5!

There's other news from our Education Department too. Last week, Director of Education Allison MacLaury left her position after several years with Mosesian Arts, but she wrote these kinds words for the many colleagues, students, and families she's worked with:

"Since my first time teaching theater for the summer program in 2016, I have deeply loved being part of the MCA team. The dozens of classes and WCT productions I have worked on have been so special and rewarding for me, all thanks to the dedicated students, talented staff, and welcoming community. Even when we were physically separated and only making art online during COVID, I consistently felt inspired, joyful, and connected. Thank you for all the fun during our many years of collaboration!"

Thank you, Allison! We wish you all the best!

ON OUR STAGES

This Wednesday in our Black Box Theater, see this season’s fourth and final concert with Berklee College of Music faculty artists. From Cindy Scott's NENO (New England Meets New Orleans), you can expect a gospel-jazz-spring celebration featuring some of the sounds of Cindy’s beloved New Orleans. Originally from Tupelo, Mississippi, Cindy has lived a life steeped in all forms of American roots music, jazz, gospel, and southern soul. Her technical mastery and deep commitment to lyrical expression has earned her loyal fans around the world.

Other performances this spring include Jayden Jamison's Kingdom Showcase (April 7), Moonbox Productions' The House of Ramón Iglesia (April 14-30), Post-Meridian Radio Players' Metropolis (April 28-29), and The Briar & Rusty Show: Briar & Rusty in SPACE!!! (May 18).

IN OUR GALLERIES

Our current exhibition, Printmaking and Social Engagement, explores traditional printmaking techniques and their relevance today in creating politically and socially engaged works. Plan to join us for a Gallery Talk with Artists on April 26.

Running concurrently through May 5 is Art in a Silent City, showing the work of Mount Auburn Cemetery Artists in Residence.

YardArt is also on display in Watertown this month! A community-wide celebration of creativity and fun in front yards, porches and windows all over Watertown, this program is open to all residents, families, organizations, clubs, classes, artists, and businesses through the end of this month. Join us for a celebration and reception at MCA on April 12!
