M is for Momentum

Dear Friends,

We are so excited to share with you that momentum is building at the M! And, at the heart of every new project, bold exploration, and unique idea, is a community of people willing to stand behind the M’s mission: to explore American identities through art and creativity. Each season of the M’s growth is due to the support of curious, thoughtful, and committed supporters like you. Thank you.

If you haven’t heard about the M’s recent progress—there’s a lot of exciting news to catch up on! By pivoting to exclusively street-facing exhibitions in the windows and adding skyway murals, the M broadened its reach by thousands, recognizing the value of accessible art in daily life. This stride into 24/7 public exhibitions provided visibility for the artists and curators involved with each project, from the Southeast Asian Diaspora Project to the African American Interpretive Center of Minnesota, to Emerging Curators Institute, and beyond.

For the current window exhibition, Im/perfect Slumbers (on view through August 20, 2023), Katya Oicherman has brought together many artists who have different voices, life experiences, and art practices. In that difference, there is a sense of unity in the exploration that brought each artist’s vision to fruition.

Amoke Awele Kubat, an Im/perfect Slumbers artist (pictured above with Dr. Beane and incoming board member Dr. Patricia Marroquin Norby), said, "Everybody at the M was here for me to be successful. That experience will take me further and further. I now have confidence. And, I have experience. I have a museum that is committed to supporting me. The experience was very welcoming, very helpful, and very encouraging.”

When you are welcomed and encouraged, anything is possible.

Support The M Today!

The M’s unique mission means that artists like Amoke find ways to be expressive and honest without boundaries. The M is committed to amplifying voices not often heard in art museums, expanding curatorial opportunities, and exploring what it looks like to try something new.

By showing up for the M, you show up for artists and communities, especially those who have been historically excluded. Everyone’s stories are important at the M, and the variety of lives and experiences in St. Paul make it a richer, more dynamic place to live, work, and visit.

Please consider a gift in support of the M's important mission today.

Hazel Belvo: For Love, opens in the M's Contemporary Gallery in late September 2023.

For Love is the first retrospective of Belvo’s career, which spans more than 70 years. Reviewing an artistic trajectory that weaves its way through the phases of a full and eventful existence; gaining insight into the broader struggles of many women artists as they work to build careers while caring for others; working for others, and struggling to make change in the world.
