Holiday Greetings from Finland!

Wondering what Miss Pinja has been up to while visiting family in Finland?

Hi everyone & Happy New Year! I hope you all had a peaceful & relaxing holiday. I wanted to share a little bit of what I have been up to during my time here in Finland.

I spent Christmas at home with my family, grandparents and cousins. We of course ate delicious food, baked pastries and shared presents. In the picture below you can see the

traditional finnish “Joulutorttu” which is a buttery puff pastry filled with either plum or apple cinnamon jam. Yummy!

During the holidays I like to try other sports and activities outside of dance that I don’t normally have the time to do. This year I went wall climbing and cross country skiing. After skiing outside in -15c (5f) it was great to come back inside and enjoy the hot sauna.

My parents and I went to see “Lux Helsinki” which is an annually organized light festival that transforms familiar buildings and spaces in the city center into unique works of urban art during the darkest time of the year. We only get about 4 hours of sunlight per day in December so these kinds of events really cheer people up!

On New Year’s Eve I went to see a performance at the Finnish National Opera House called “Circ Opera” in which opera and circus were mixed together in one spectacle! It was absolutely breathtaking to see the acrobats and magicians perform to live music and singing.

My family doesn’t have any pets but we were happy to take care of my aunt’s dog for a few days. This little puppy called “Mauno” entertained us by throwing his burger everywhere he could!

After a few weeks off it was fun to get back in the studio and take a class with a dear friend of mine. We took class at the Helsinki Dance Academy which is the school I started dancing at the age of 4. It is wonderful to have a place I can return to and meet my old teachers and friends.

What It's Like to Dance in a Roxey Ballet Production

If you've ever wondered what it's like to dance in a stage production with Roxey Ballet, senior student Julia Genovay is the person to talk to. Dancing with Roxey since she was 6 years old, Julia says at age 18 she still looks forward to it every year.

Participating in a Roxey production is a family affair. To create the magic of the shows, parents are asked to volunteer their time with opportunities that include backstage crew, ushering, marketing, and more. Over the years, Julia's mom has enjoyed helping with costume fittings "because she got to witness the transformation of a student to a performer up close", and as a monitor "because she got to be immersed in the behind-the-scenes action.

One of the most unique aspects of participating in a Roxey production as a student is the exposure to the professional company dancers. "Being able to see them rehearse, as well as rehearsing alongside them, has never been short of inspiring!" says Julia. This exposure begins with students as young as 4 years old, and in the Cinderella production, the youngest dancers cast as mice get the opportunity to dance alongside Cinderella herself."

 Cinderella auditions are open to local dance students ages 4 and up and will take place on January 21, 2023 at the Roxey Event Center, 46 N Sugan Rd, New Hope, PA. More details can be found at roxeyballet.org/auditions.
