Roxey Ballet's February Education Recap
During the month of February for Black History Month, the students at High Bridge spent time examining the life of the legendary Maya Angelou. As an activist, poet, author, and speaker we examined her words, expressions, and poetry as vessels for our movement.
To start this lesson we broke into groups and created choreography about one aspect of her life or how she must have felt. We used this exercise as a way to invest the kids in her life and have them critically think about her achievements, struggles, and life as a whole.
Following that lesson we picked some of Ms. Angelou's famous poems including "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" and "Still I Rise" as inspiration points for the students to create dances that further examine what she wrote about. The students loved these exercises and found the life and work of Maya Angelou to be inspiring and incredible.
