Ayanna Dozier

Collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art

We are pleased to announce that Ayanna Dozier's film "Nightwalker" (2022) has been acquired by the Whitney Museum of American Art for its Permanent Collection.

"Throughout various artistic and literary works, the topology of the night shines as a source of inspiration for the sublime, uncanny encounters, and a space of quiet introspection of the self for male cultural producers. For women, however, the night brings upon a cascading blanket of harm, surveillance, and terror. Scholar Linda Williams attributes this dread of the night to both real world and cinematic depictions of violence against women that occurs after the sun goes down. To be a woman who walks alone at night then is an anomaly for women who walk at night are systemically associated with sex work by state and city laws. These “nightwalker” codes disproportionately target Black femmes or women who “make a display” by wearing clothing that can be deemed risqué by an arresting officer.” - Ayanna Dozier

"The Myth of Normal: A Celebration of Authentic Expression"
Curated by Mari Spirito
October 5, 2023 - May 19, 2024
MassArt Art Museum, Boston

Ezra Wube's video work "Una Favolosa Storia (A True Fairytale)” (2020) is featured in "The Myth of Normal: A Celebration of Authentic Expression," curated by Mari Spirito, a group exhibition at MassArt Art Museum celebrating the 150th anniversary of the MassArt college.

The stop-motion animation of paintings made with plasticine, grapples with the history of the Italian occupation of Ethiopia. Set against radiant Ethiopian landscapes are images recreated by the artist from historical materials of fascist propaganda promoting the invasion such as posters, school notebooks, and table games, among others. The colorful and playful animations reshape the underlying atrocious narrative into one resembling that of a fairytale.

Marni Kotak

Elephant Magazine
"My Child, My Masterpiece"
By Gwyneth Giller
May 31, 2023

"For centuries, art has utilised the image of mothers or mothers-to-be as a symbol of fertility. Maternity has been represented in art since the beginning of time, but never in a way that resonated with actual mothers. It’s taken an army of contemporary artists like Marni Kotak, Catherine Opie and Mary Kelly to dismantle these preconceived artistic notions."
