From: Massillon MuseumThe Massillon Museum has been awarded reaccreditation by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), a prestigious designation it has held since 1972, early in the national accreditation process.
Massillon Museum Executive Director Alexandra Nicholis Coon writes: "Over the past 15 years, the Massillon Museum staff members, boards of directors, volunteers, and community of supporters have helped uphold the standards and best practices required to maintain this award of excellence. We will honor our commitment to the community whose heritage we safeguard and make accessible through state-of-the-art preservation methods administered by qualified professionals by providing educational opportunities that expand creative thinking and inspire all ages; by offering innovative programs and exhibitions that extend beyond our city and share narratives from around the world to enhance the quality of life for those who participate in this amazing Museum; and by providing a safe, welcoming facility for present and future generations. I could not be more proud to celebrate this recognition with everyone who supports and loves MassMu."
AAM announced two first-time accreditations and 33 reaccreditation awards at the June 2024 meeting of the Accreditation Commission. Of the nation’s estimated 33,000 museums, 1,112 are currently accredited.
Through a rigorous process of self-assessment and review by their peers, these museums have demonstrated they meet standards and best practices as educational entities that are appropriate stewards of the collections and resources they hold in the public trust.
“Accreditation is a monumental achievement,” said Marilyn Jackson, AAM President and CEO. “The process demonstrates an institution’s commitment to best practice and is flexible enough to be accomplished by museums of any size.”
Recognized as the field’s gold standard for museum excellence for more than 50 years, AAM accreditation signifies a museum’s quality and credibility to the entire museum community, to governments and outside agencies, and to the public. The accreditation program ensures the integrity and accessibility of museum collections, reinforces the educational and public service roles of museums, and promotes good governance practices and ethical behavior.
Museums must undergo a reaccreditation review at least every 10 years to maintain accredited status. Alliance accreditation brings national recognition to a museum for its commitment to excellence, accountability, high professional standards and continued institutional improvement. The program is the field’s primary vehicle for quality assurance, self-regulation, and public accountability. It strengthens the museum profession by promoting practices that enable leaders to make informed decisions, allocate resources wisely, and remain financially and ethically accountable to provide the best possible service to the public.
The Massillon Museum appreciates operating support from the Ohio Arts Council and ArtsinStark, marketing support from Visit Canton, and the support of the citizens of Massillon. Many events and exhibitions are funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
