Arts and Entertainment

November 12, 2024

From: Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art

We at MASS MoCA understand the ways in which the arts and humanities are central to the road ahead in this country. We believe that the explorations of artists show us something not only about who we are, but about who we can be, and affirm the values that the art we present displays. Our doors are open to anyone looking for a place for contemplation, connection, and inspiration.

Whatever you’re seeking this month, come spend some time at MASS MoCA to experience the company of family, friends, and neighbors at art encounters, family storytime, and musical performances. Or come solo, and find a quiet corner for reflection on our spacious, creative campus. We’ll see you soon.

Jeffrey Gibson: POWER FULL BECAUSE WE'RE DIFFERENT

On view now
Building 5

Jeffrey Gibson’s POWER FULL BECAUSE WE’RE DIFFERENT is a newly commissioned immersive installation inhabiting MASS MoCA’s signature Building 5 gallery. Gibson is known for creating installations, performances, paintings, and sculpture that elevate and provide visibility to queer and Indigenous communities, whose cultural narratives have been historically marginalized. Throughout the run of the exhibition, the project will host a series of performances by Indigenous creatives from across North America including Laura Ortman, Martha Redbone, MX Oops and more, with details to be announced soon.

Gibson views the exhibition as an invitation to other Indigenous creatives to contribute to a space where difference is not only considered, it is celebrated. The installation features seven aspirational and newly constructed oversized garments that are adorned with beads and found materials, that have been organized in kaleidoscopic patterns and are suspended from the ceiling on tipi poles, or worn during performances. These works are informed by various faith–based regalia and club culture - paying homage to the past while signaling hope for the future.
