Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test—charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence.

NEW THIS WEEK...MORE OSCAR nominated films!

THE QUIET GIRL — A remarkable debut for writer-director Colm Bairéad, The Quiet Girl offers a deceptively simple reminder that the smallest stories can leave a large emotional impact. Set in Rural Ireland 1981, this film tells the story of a young girl, Cáit, who is sent away for the summer from her dysfunctional family to live with "her mother's people". These are Seán and Eibhlín Cinnsealach; a middle-aged couple she has never met. Slowly, in the care of this couple, Cáit blossoms and discovers a new way of living, but in this house where affection grows and there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one. Nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards.

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT in collaboration with Netflix Films. Oscar nominated in 9 categories, including Best Picture and International Picture. Both timely and timeless, ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT retains the power of its classic source material by focusing on the futility of war. War breaks out in Germany in 1914. Paul Bäumer and his classmates quickly enlist in the army to serve their fatherland. No sooner are they drafted than the first images from the battlefield show them the reality of war.

CONTINUING THIS WEEK...

ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED - Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed is an epic, emotional and interconnected story about internationally renowned artist and activist Nan Goldin told through her slideshows, intimate interviews, ground-breaking photography, and rare footage of her personal fight to hold the Sackler family accountable for the opioid overdose crisis.

NOMINATED OSCAR SHORTS — LIVE ACTION, ANIMATION, & DOCUMENTARY.  For the 18th consecutive year, the Film Society presents the Oscar-Nominated Short Films. With all three categories rotating – Animated, Live Action and Documentary – this is your annual chance to predict the winners (and have the edge in your Oscar ballot)! A perennial hit with audiences around the country and the world, don’t miss this year’s selection of shorts. Playing until the Academy Awards on Sunday, March 12th. All nominees and trailers scroll down.

Wednesday, March 8th @ 7:30 pm

Alex Garland, writer of "28 Days Later" and "Sunshine", makes his directorial debut with the stylish and cerebral thriller, Ex Machina (2014). Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company’s brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test—charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated––and more deceptive––than the two men could have imagined.

Yogesh Girdhar is a computer scientist, and the PI of the WARPLab (http://warp.whoi.edu) at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), in the Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering department. He received his BS and MS from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY; and his Ph.D. from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. During his Ph.D. Girdhar developed an interest in ocean exploration using autonomous underwater vehicles, which motivated him to come to WHOI, initially as a postdoc, and then later continue as a scientist to start WARPLab. Girdhar’s research has since then focused on developing smarter autonomous exploration robots that, through the use of AI, can accelerate the scientific discovery process in oceans. Some notable recognition of his work includes the Best Paper Award in Service Robotics at ICRA 2020, finalist for Best Paper Award at IROS 2018, and honorable mention for 2014 CIPPRS Doctoral Dissertation Award.
