Greetings,
MV Film Center's first "My Favorite Movie" poll winner is CASABLANCA. Congratulations to CAROL who wrote this in about the film: Such a classic. Most people have only seen it on TV. Wouldn't it be great to see it on a big screen as it was intended? I guess there were many who agreed. HAVE YOU SEEN THIS CLASSIC ON A BIG MOVIE SCREEN?
You have a passage to Rick's Café Américain tonight (Wednesday), May 10th.
CASABLANCA (1942) - An undisputed masterpiece and perhaps Hollywood's quintessential statement on love and romance, Casablanca has only improved with age, boasting career-defining performances from Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), who owns a nightclub in Casablanca, discovers his old flame Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) is in town with her husband, Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid). Laszlo is a famed rebel, and with Germans on his tail, Ilsa knows Rick can help them get out of the country.
Celebrate Mother's Day at the Film Center with three films, plus a matinée screening of ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME MARGARET. Where are you taking Mom?
NEW THIS WEEK...
STILL: A MICHAEL J. FOX MOVIE -- The account of Fox’s public life, full of nostalgic thrills and cinematic gloss, will unspool alongside his never-before-seen private journey, including the years that followed his diagnosis, at 29, with Parkinson’s disease. Intimate and honest, and produced with unprecedented access to Fox and his family. With a mix of adventure and romance, comedy and drama, watching the film will feel like … well, like a Michael J. Fox movie.
LITTLE RICHARD: I AM EVERYTHING tells the story of the Black origins of rock n' roll, exploding the whitewashed canon of American pop music to reveal the innovator -- the originator -- Richard Penniman. Throughout his life, Richard careened like a shiny cracked pinball between God, sex and rock n' roll. The world tried to put him in a box, but Richard was an omni being who contained multitudes -- he was unabashedly everything.
CONTINUING THIS WEEK...
ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME MARGARET. First published in 1970, “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret” is an enduring classic for a reason. This is a warm film, a good-hearted film, a funny film, with something to offer everyone. That’s so rare these days, but as we welcome the Judy Blumeissance with open arms, we need to remember it wasn’t always so rare, and the stories and characters that persist do so with good reason: They’re timeless.
Art Exhibition On Screen: VERMEER: THE GREATEST EXHIBITION. This new film invites audiences to a private view of the largest ever Vermeer exhibition, accompanied by the director of the Rijksmuseum and the curator of this Spring's ground-breaking show. A truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! In three days, this exhibition at the Rijksmuseum sold out its tickets. This is the only way you will be able to see the greatest exhibition of Vermeer, 28 iconic paintings.

May 13th @ 4:00 pm
May 14th @ 7:30 pm
May 17th @ 7:30 pm
May 18th @ 7:30 pm
The film, which will incorporate documentary, archival and scripted elements, will recount Fox’s extraordinary story in his own words — the improbable tale of an undersized kid from a Canadian army base who rose to the heights of stardom in 1980s Hollywood. The account of Fox’s public life, full of nostalgic thrills and cinematic gloss, will unspool alongside his never-before-seen private journey, including the years that followed his diagnosis, at 29, with Parkinson’s disease. Intimate and honest, and produced with unprecedented access to Fox and his family, the film will chronicle Fox’s personal and professional triumphs and travails, and will explore what happens when an incurable optimist confronts an incurable disease.
Director Davis Guggenheim has mixed a film of adventure and romance, comedy and drama, watching the film will feel like … well, like a Michael J. Fox movie.
LITTLE RICHARD: I AM EVERYTHING
May 13th @ 7:30 pm
May 18th @ 7:30 pm
Director Lisa Cortés’ LITTLE RICHARD: I AM EVERYTHING tells the story of the Black queer origins of rock n’ roll, exploding the whitewashed canon of American pop music to reveal the innovator – the originator – Richard Penniman. Through a wealth of archive and performance that brings us into Richard’s complicated inner world, the film unspools the icon’s life story with all its switchbacks and contradictions. In interviews with family, musicians, and cutting-edge Black and queer scholars, the film reveals how Richard created an art form for ultimate self-expression, yet what he gave to the world he was never able to give to himself. Throughout his life, Richard careened like a shiny cracked pinball between God, sex and rock n’ roll. The world tried to put him in a box, but Richard was an omni being who contained multitudes – he was unabashedly everything.
