Così fan tutte and the Lesson We Learn

Mozart’s Così fan tutte hits our stage tonight, kicking off the year with sharp wit, dazzling music, and plenty of laughter. But beneath the slapstick comedy lies a sharp critique of selfishness and privilege-making this opera as thought-provoking as it is entertaining.

As the final collaboration between Mozart and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, Così fan tutte also serves as the middle chapter in a trilogy envisioned by the late, great director Michael Cavanagh. But don’t worry-you don’t need to have seen the other two to dive in. In this note, Cavanagh and current director Shawna Lucey break down the trilogy’s concept and why they’ve reimagined this classic in the glamour and turmoil of the 1930s.

Get the inside scoop from the directors and hear Lucey’s take on continuing Cavanagh’s bold vision.
