Believe it or not, but there was a time when only men were allowed to perform on the stage (or in church!). Thankfully, those days are long gone and many women have and continue to change and dazzle the world of opera with their amazing talent. While we have been highlighting some of the wonderful woman pushing the artform today on our Instagram and Facebook, we want to take a moment to remember the icons of the past that helped shaped opera to the artform we love.

From helping spread opera outside of Italy to exceeding what was thought possible with the human voice to removing segregation in opera houses, the list is truly an astounding one. This season, we're presenting Noah's Flood, by Benjamin Britten.
