From: Los Angeles OperaWhy the Art World Needs the Recovered Voices Initiative
There is no greater test of a masterpiece than how it weathers the passage of time. The years can be incredibly kind or detrimental, and many works can be lost altogether. When James Conlon first began his tenure as LA Opera's music director, he made it his goal to highlight operas that never got their due more specifically, suffered censorship due to Nazi policies calling the initiative Recovered Voices. These operas could have very easily been lost to time if not revived, one of those operas being our own acclaimed production of Zemlinsky's The Dwarf.
The influence of Recovered Voices can still be felt all these years later, as we prepare for the return of The Dwarf to our stage alongside another rare gem, Highway 1, USA. Travel through the history of Recovered Voices below and discover the rich lineup of operas almost lost to time.
Meet Opera's Favorite Author
Many classic authors have seen their work adapted to opera, but perhaps none more than Oscar Wilde.
With 27 opera adaptions to his name, it is clear that composers couldn't get enough of Wilde's work. But why?
Ahead of our upcoming production of The Dwarf (based on Wilde's The Birthday of the Infanta) we took a look at the iconic Irishman's work to understand his impact on readers and composers alike.
