Starting in January the museums will be hosting a brand-new lecture series at the Branigan Cultural Center. This series will draw on the variety of topics represented in our museums to bring the Las Cruces community exciting lectures about regional, national, and international history and culture. This lecture series will be presented both in-person and via Zoom.  

The first lecture will be on Saturday, January 14 at 11am with guest speaker, Pablo Martínez. Join Martínez for an engaging conversation on José Posada, the legendary printmaker of Mexico, in his lecture, “Posada and the Revolutionary Cultural Project.”

The lecture, "Posada and the Revolutionary Cultural Project" will explore the relationship between the work of José Guadalupe Posada, known for his costumbrista representations, and the revolutionary cultural project that emerged after the armed phase of the Mexican Revolution. The revolutionary cultural project aimed to establish a new type of Mexican identity that would be nourished by the country's various folkloric and cultural expressions. By re-signifying Posada's work, which was conceived before the armed phase of the revolution, he became one of the defining elements of Mexican idiosyncrasy. As Posada's work is a piece of Mexico, so is Mexico a piece of Posada's work

Pablo Martínez is a Ph.D. candidate in Borderlands History at the University of Texas at El Paso. His research interests include the Latin American colonial period and the indigenous revolts in Chiapas that led to the formation of the EZLN. While at first glance these topics seem disparate, they yield valuable insights into Mexican idiosyncrasies, mestizo cosmogonies, and collective identities, a central concern in Martínez research.
