The Las Cruces Museum of Art is excited to announce two dynamic word-based events that are based on its new exhibition Clyde Butcher: Lifeworks in Photography. They are a poetry workshop and open mic event featuring poetry created during the workshop. The ekphrastic poetry workshop is set for Saturday, September 28, from 3:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. and an open mic event is planned for Saturday, October 19 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Members of the El Paso’s Barbed Wire Open Mic Series (A BorderSenses Event) will lead both events.

Taking inspiration from Clyde Butcher’s dramatic black and white nature and landscape photographs, ekphrastic poetry workshop participants will create poetry and prose while in the Museum of Art surrounded by the artwork. There is no fee for the poetry workshop, but registration is limited to twenty people, ages 18 and up. Email Jennifer McClung at [email protected] to register. The open mic event also will take place in the museum gallery and will be open to anyone who wants to participate. However, poetry workshop participants will be first in the queue to present their works. The open mic event is free and open to the public but is intended for adult audiences.

Clyde Butcher: Lifeworks in Photography was organized by Window of the Eye, Inc. and toured by Photographic Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles, CA. It is on view September 6 through December 28, 2024.

The museum[CB1]  is located at 491 N. Main St. and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. There is no admission fee. The museum is accessible from Road RUNNER Transit Route 1 Stop 1. For additional information, visit the website at https://www.lascruces.gov/museums or call (575)541-2137.
