From: Lamb and Wool FestivalSheep are the star of the show at Lamb and Wool Festival! Come watch the fascinating shearing process as we remove the heavy winter coats from our sheep and llamas. Visit with the Wasatch Woolpack Handspinners to see how they turn raw wool into yarn and cool finished goods. Learn about the different sources of wool (hint: it’s not just from sheep), various wool uses and fiber arts as you spend the day at Farm Country.
Sheep Shearing Demo
Join us for this annual favorite as our farmer friend shows us how he skillfully and painlessly separates a sheep from its heavy winter coat just in time for Spring. Ask questions and watch the entire shearing process from start to finish.
Grow And Tell
Different sheep and other animals produce different kinds of wool. See if you can notice the differences up close under a microscope. Do they feel different? Learn how farmers detangle wool, turn it to roving, and then spin it into yarn!
Weaving
Once wool is sheared, cleaned, carded and spun it is ready to be turned into many of the beautiful and useful things we use every day. Come learn about the process of weaving where fibers are carefully combined to make a finished fabric.
Carding
What happens to the wool after it is sheared? Well, it is gently washed and then carded—a process to lay all the squiggly animal fibers smooth and going the same direction. Learn about the tools needed to card wool and give it a try.
Needle Felting Mural
Wool has many different uses. Besides clothing and blankets you can create art! Help us create a community art project using a needle felting technique and learn some fun facts about wool fibers and how they can lock together.
