Celebrating Pride 2023

This year's PROUD OUT LOUD at Theatre West will offer readings of short plays and monologues, mostly developed by playwrights in our Writers Workshop. The stories span a wide range of the LGBTQIA experience and range in form from traditional plays to personal stand-up routines and musings on the community's history.

Some of the featured playwrights are Benjamin Scuglia, Dina Morrone, Mimi Kmet, Arden Teresa Lewis, Mara Wells, and Michael Van Duzer. A partial cast list includes Heidi Appe, Mimi Kmet, Mara Wells, Christopher Landis, Olivia Bates, Paul Cady, Benjamin Scuglia, Anne Leyden, Leesa Freed, Sandra Tucker,  Ashley Taylor and Dina Morrone.

A Jewish Crimean immigrant fleeing pogroms, persecution and censorship in Tsarist Russia, she became a Broadway legend, the highest paid silent movie star in Tinseltown, and the first female director/producer/writer in Hollywood. Unapologetic about her bisexuality, she coined the infamous “sewing circle,” proclaiming her strength when women were relegated to silence. She defied the moral and artistic codes of her time that eventually forced her into obscurity. Now, Nazimova returns from her grave, her uncompromising voice and ever-watchful eye casting a gaze that speaks to where we have been, how far we’ve come, and what we need to hold onto as we work for progress.
