From: Kala Art InstituteThank you for supporting Kala's Fund for the Future!
Kala has been supporting artists and engaging the community for half a century. In honor of Kala's 50th year of operation and to support Kala's core programs, equipment purchases for all spaces, and build out of the annex, we set out to raise $500,000 this year. 388 people have contributed to this special campaign.
Together we have raised almost $470,000, twice as much as a typical year. Thank you for your generosity, love, and encouragement! With $30,000 still to go, we're extending the campaign into our new fiscal year, which just started October 1st. We're so close to reaching the Fund for the Future goal.
Thank you for supporting Kala's mission and work today and for years to come!
Roadwork - Upcoming Exhibition at Kala Gallery
Opening Reception: Thursday, October 24, 5-7pm
Kala Gallery is excited to present the exhibition Roadwork featuring new works by Cheryl Derricotte & Marcel Pardo Ariza, 2023-2024 Print Public, municipal artist-in-residence fellows.
2023-2024 Print Public supported two artists with concurrent 16-month artist residencies with Kala and with City of Berkeley’s Planning Department. Cheryl Derricotte worked with Katie Van Dyke and the Pilot Climate Equity Action Fund and Marcel Pardo Ariza was paired with Robert Rivera and the San Pablo Avenue Specific Plan.
The title of the exhibition Roadwork, reflects the artists’ understanding that their work with the City of Berkeley was a starting point. We are on the road to climate justice. We are on the road to newly defined streetscapes that better support residents and businesses. We are on the road to a society that equitably values the leadership of artists and arts institutions.
There is Roadwork ahead.

Intro to Cyanotype Printing & Toning with Botanicals
4 Tuesdays: Oct 29 - Nov19 (6-9pm)
Instructor: Christine Huhn
Location: Heinz Printmaking Studio
In this class, students will be given a brief introduction to the cyanotype printing process using both negatives and found objects. Historically, cyanotypes were toned with both harmful chemicals and environmentally safe botanicals including teas and herbs. These materials alter the typically known blueprints and allow for a wider range of colors. Students will experiment with different botanicals, papers, and textiles to create unique imagery.
3 Saturdays: November 2, 9 & 16 (10am-4pm)
Instructor: Rich Fowler
Location: Heinz Printmaking Studio
This class is an introduction to relief printing with linoleum. Students will also learn how to make reduction prints using a technique to make multicolor prints from one linoleum block. Students will learn the step-by-step process that will take their initial design ideas to a small final edition of prints. Topics we’ll cover include linocut supplies, carving techniques, print registration and printing with an etching press. No prior printmaking experience is necessary.
