The Expressive Print: Intro to Letterpress with Mary V. Marsh
Saturdays, Oct 21 - Nov 4, 10am-3pm in the Kala Printmaking Studio
Through examples and ideas, we will talk about combining words and images to create an expressive print. Using a Vandercook proof press, we will learn to hand set lead and wood type, carve images with linoleum, and combine them into a small edition of a two-color letterpress print.
Linocut Printing: Pattern Design on Fabric & Clothing with Alyssa Aviles
Saturdays, Oct 28 - Nov 4, 10am-1pm in the Kala Printmaking Studio
Students will learn the process of designing and carving an image on to a piece of linoleum, and other methods of printing patterns on fabric. Students are encouraged to think experimentally with their printing surfaces and are invited to bring clothing to up-cycle with their designs or print on a large piece of fabric that can be used for a future project.
Screenprinting as Painting II with Leonard Reidelbach
Sundays, Nov 12 & 19, 10am-4pm in the Kala Printmaking Studio
Using the foundations from Screenprinting as Painting I, participants will develop their own two or three layer print with support from the instructor. There will be an emphasis on exploring strategies to make one-of-a-kind iterations across a collection of prints, including monoprinting, reductive printmaking, and advanced color mixing
Kala Artist-In-Residence Application Due Oct 15th
Are you interested in becoming an Artist-In-Residence at Kala? Applications are due via Slideroom on October 15, 2023.
Kala's AIR program is a subsidized fee-based artist residency that provides access to Kala's printshop, digital lab, black and white darkroom, and project spaces as available. Resident artists have 24-hour access to the printmaking studio and digital lab, individual storage space including a flat file and cubby, and opportunities to participate in Kala exhibitions. AIR Alumni: you are welcome to come back and schedule a future residency by contacting [email protected] 1-2 months in advance, no application is needed! Shared Artist Housing is available for 4 artists per month residing outside of Northern California: two shared artist apartments, each unit is a 2-bedroom apartment, meaning you will be living with a roommate and sharing a kitchen, living room, and bathroom across the street from Kala.
Community Workshop: Day of the Dead / Día De Muertos: Honoring our Loved Ones
Date & Time: Saturday, October 21, 11am-2pm
Location: Kala Gallery & Community Classroom
Join us for a Community Art Workshop to celebrate and honor our loved ones who have passed away and are no longer with us (ancestors, family, friends, celebrities, or even a beloved pet). We will provide a variety of materials and templates of Day of the Dead symbols and images that you can use to create meaningful and colorful creations. Art activities facilitated by Teaching Artist Natalie Palms and Kala staff. Open for ages 5+. Register via Eventbrite.

Profits benefit Kala Art Institute- Kala's annual fundraiser was Dia's first auctioneering event and is where the idea for the book all started. Your donations via ticket sales will help keep Kala thriving in the East Bay. Bring a friend, dress up or dress down. Come out and enjoy art, food, wine and a discussion with Dia on the wild ideas inside Ask Like an Auctioneer then end the night with a dance party with Baby A!
