Kala @ CODEX 2024 and The Embodied Press Reception

Kala is hosting a gallery reception on Saturday, February 3rd , 3pm – 6pm for our current exhibition, The Embodied Press: queer abstraction and the artists’ book, curated by Anthea Black. Please check the CODEX website for details.

The CODEX Foundation's 9th International Biennial Book Art Fair & Symposium will be held February 4–7, 2024 at the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland, CA. The symposium and related events will take place in Berkeley and across the Bay Area.

Kala's 2024-2025 Fellowship Application Open

The 2024-2025 Kala Fellowship application is open! The Fellowship is for local, national, and international artists working in a variety of disciplines. In 2024, Kala will award six artists a $3,000 stipend, unlimited access to Kala’s facilities for one to nine months, one Kala class, and a culminating show in the Kala Gallery. 

This year the submissions will be juried by Kala’s Co-Director Mayumi Hamanaka, Fellowship alum Weston Teruya, and Anthony Graham, Senior Curator at Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. Artists interested in the Fellowship Program are welcome to apply online at kala.slideroom.com  – 2024-2025 Fellowship deadline is March 15th (9:00 pm PT) – apply here! here!

Community Art Workshop: Lunar New Year

Date & Time: Saturday, February 3rd, noon-3pm

Location: Kala Gallery and Community Classroom

Cost: Free and Donate-What-You-Wish tickets available, RSVP via Eventbrite

Lunar New Year brings families and friends together to celebrate the new year. In this workshop, participants will create bead embroidery artworks inspired by The Year of the Dragon and other cultural symbols we recognize as part of this celebration. This community art workshop will be facilitated by artist Demetri Broxton and Kala staff.

Adult Class Highlights

Intro to Digital Illustration

Saturdays, Feb 10-March 16, 10am-1pm

Instructor: Sejal Popat

Location: Kala Printmaking Studio

Using iPads, styluses (i.e. Apple pen) and Procreate as our main tools, we’ll go through several activities building skills and familiarity with the interface. This course will survey various approaches to digital illustration and include specific exercises focused on color, composition, texture, designing your own digital brushes, and defining your illustration style.

Mokuhanga 1: Japanese Woodblock Printing

Saturdays, Feb 17-March 2, 10am-4pm

Instructor: Tomoko Murakami

Location: Kala Community Classroom

Mokuhanga 1 introduces a traditional Japanese woodblock printing process, ukiyo-e technique. Participants will learn to carve the woodblock, use Japanese carving tools, and print with water-based ink on Japanese paper. Learn to carve your own woodblocks and create a small edition of multi-color prints! All levels welcome.

Intro to Lumen Printing

Saturdays, Feb 17 & 24, 10am-2pm

Instructor: Christine Huhn

Location: Kala Printmaking Studio

In this class, students will be given an introduction to the camera-less photographic process, lumen printing. Create unique imagery in the photographic darkroom using silver gelatin (black and white) paper, found objects and light. Students will be able to experiment with different light sources and photographic papers. Students may also bring negatives to class to experiment with if they have them.

Intro to Collage & Zine Making

Sundays, Feb 18-March 24, 10am-1pm

Instructor: Dio Brooks

Location: Kala Community Classroom

Participants will learn and practice collage techniques with the goal of creating spreads and motifs for a zine project. The collage portion of the class will emphasize collage as a creatively expanding exercise for artists, a tool for mocking up and creating novel imagery, and explore the relationship between collage and digital media.

Drawing for Teens (Winter)

Tuesdays, Jan 30-March 12, 4-5:30pm

During this 9-week winter session, the class will focus on contemporary methods and techniques in drawing. Teens will learn how different materials and methods can create different textures, surfaces, and effects in drawing.

Teen Studio: Illustration 101

Thursdays, Feb 8-29, 4-6pm

Instructor: Gideon Egbuchulam

Location: Kala Gallery & Classroom

Come explore illustration as a way of observing and drawing references to the natural world to tell a story or communicate an idea.Participants will take inspiration from prominent styles of past and contemporary artists including comic artists who have shaped the creative landscape as we know it.

Join Kala’s After School Program today! Our fun and interactive art-making experiences are designed for young artists in 1st-5th grades. Participants explore a variety of visual art media, techniques, and concepts, and learn about diverse artists, artistic practices, and themes related to personal and community experiences.
