March at Hull-House was full of behind-the-scenes action and visits to our friends across Chicago. In this newsletter, we’ll share details of what we’ve been working on, some visitors we welcomed, and events from our partners. But first, we have a big announcement: a new gallery activation!

The Hull-House Museum is proud to present Read/Write Library, a pop-up collection of books, comics, journals, zines, and other creative material that celebrates communities across the Chicago area. We invite visitors of all ages to explore the library’s unique collection and consider how work typically left out of libraries and museums can inform our understanding of local history.

 Come visit Read/Write Library at the Hull-House Museum with stories about your own neighborhood. We’ll be celebrating the collaboration on Sunday, April 21st with a Family Day. Bring your friends and chosen family and join us for activities led by Read/Write Library and our pals at the Chicago Creative Reuse Exchange. This event is free and open to the public, but we encourage you to REGISTER HERE so we have enough snacks.

Hull-House Visitors and Updates

Last month, we hosted a workshop for a community group from Centro San Bonifacio. Educators Candace and Georgi led them on a conversational tour of the Hull-House Museum and then gathered in the Residents’ Dining Hall to consider what it means for a place to “feel like home”. We then created a community mural reflecting those thoughts. The murals turned out beautifully. We look forward to visiting them at their site, soon!

We closed the traveling exhibition Ex-Votos: Devotion Beyond Medium and it’s headed to its next installation at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Our incredible Exhibitions team worked hard on the de-installation and prepping the space for Read/Write Library. They even found time to install a new painting! It’s a new acquisition from the M. Christine Schwartz Collection. If you love cats or paintings (or both) come by for a visit and take a look.

Finally, check out this fascinating article written by Tessa Weinberg from WBEZ which traces the long history of how migrants and immigrants have shaped Chicago, how Chicagoans before us have negotiated new arrivals. - Our friends at The Arts Club of Chicago recently opened their new exhibition Mina Loy: Strangeness Is Inevitable. In conjunction with the exhibition, Every house has a door will present a new performance work at the Arts Club and at Hull-House in the Residents’ Dining Hall. The Hull-House performance will take place May 16. Register here.

- The UIC MFA Thesis Show, SEE SAW SEEN runs March 26th-April 20th here on Campus at Gallery 400.

- Remy Bumppo’s production of Love Song started March 21st at Theater Wit! For tickets, call 773.975.8150 or visit their website!

- Hull-House staff visited the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture last month and saw the exhibit Arte de la Boriqueña. Admission to the Museum is Free and the other exhibits they have on display that we highly recommended.
