ICYMI: Extreme Republicans' Plan to Gut Medicaid Comes at the Cost of Over 900,000 Illinoisans' Health Care

Trump lied to Illinoisans for months.

Chicago, IL - Last week, Democrats raised the alarm that the 931,169 Illinoisans currently receiving health care through the ACA’s Medicaid expansion could lose their benefits–thanks to Donald Trump. As reporting from the Chicago Sun-Times confirmed, Trump and his congressional allies have fully embraced the Project 2025 playbook they tried to distance themselves from on the campaign trail. Now they’re hellbent on slashing the Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansion – “increasing the burden on states.”

“Trump lied to Illinoisans for months, promising to lower their costs on Day One. Now, he and Republicans are telling nearly one million Illinoisans that they’re willing to trade their health care to hand out a tax break to the ultra-wealthy,” said DPI Chair Lisa Hernandez.

Republicans in Congress have proposed undercutting the ACA’s Medicaid expansion, which 931,169 Illinoisans rely on for health care, in order to extend tax cuts for the wealthy.

Chicago Sun-Times: “Republicans in Congress are discussing a plan to slash the Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansion, which drastically increased enrollment for the program. The cut to Medicaid costs would lower costs for the federal government, but increase the cost for states.

Several Medicaid cuts are being discussed to help fund President Donald Trump’s massive tax cut and his immigration crackdown bill.

But Illinois has a “trigger” law that would automatically end Affordable Care Act Medicaid expansions in the state if federal funding is cut - which means 931,169 Illinoisans would lose their health coverage, according to the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
