Beneath the Surface
Join Catherine Mansell at her upcoming art talk, hosted by Hygienic Art Gallery. Talk and demonstration will occur Saturday, March 15th, from 2-4 pm, at 79 Bank Street, conveniently located near the Amtrak Station in downtown New London, Connecticut.
Catherine, known for her distinctive fusion of art traditions, will guide you through her world of encaustic fresco painting. Her works are based on the enduring beauty of historical techniques. However they also reflect the combination of her Asian brush painting training with the use of rich textures of wax and buon fresco. Each artwork seeks to capture the quiet beauty that can be found in timeworn walls.
During the event, attendees will have the opportunity to hear Catherine describe her creative process, as she shares insights into her inspirations and the connection she feels with creating these surfaces .
Following the talk, Artist, Diane Brown will demonstrate the oil and cold wax process!
An artist's reception will offer guests the opportunity to engage directly with Catherine and Diane while enjoying a selection of refreshments. This event is an excellent opportunity for both art aficionados and the culturally curious to engage with an artist whose work challenges the conventional and celebrates those that created surfaces for ancient frescos.

The Wandering Uterus is a group of female artists that started showing together in 2009. It was an idea born out of the desire of several art teachers to motivate themselves to continue to be practicing artists, despite the creative drain of teaching. The group has grown over the years and is now a mixture of artists working and creating in a variety of different fields and media. While most of the group regularly show their work, there is rarely an opportunity to show more than one or two works in a given show. In this show the intent is to allow these artists to show the current body of work they are exploring in depth.
This year the group of artists has grown in number and will consist of 11 artists working in a variety of media on a variety of themes. The show will showcase the work of the following artists Beverley Fisher, Carrie Dinunzio, Shelley Osowiecki, Katie Osowiecki-Zolnik, Shannon Gagne, Kim Tyler, Tricia Anderson Kelley, Tina McCurdy, Annie Averil, Katia Porter, and Emily Holman.
Opening Reception Saturday March 22, 6-9pm
On Display until Saturday, April 19th
Emergence is a visual exploration of identity, environment, and transformation. This collection of paintings and collage delves into the complexities of womanhood, the contrasts between organic and urban landscapes, and the delicate balance between structure and freedom. Figures blend into cityscapes, revealing the tension between emotion and rigid form, while birds take flight against bold, expressive backdrops, symbolizing resilience and grace. Through layered textures and dynamic compositions, Emergence invites viewers to reflect on the beauty found in contrasts—softness against hardness, nature within geometry, and the fluid connections between personal and collective experience.
Featured Artists; Kim Abraham, Bryan R. Tyler and Lacy Martin.
Opening night Saturday, March 22nd 6-9pm. On display until Saturday April 19th.
