Mary Evelyn Sparrow ~ Speaking of Courage
Step back in time to the days when intrepid mariners braved the winter seas, crewing coasting schooners along the Atlantic seaboard. Told through the rare voice of Mary Evelyn Sparrow, a lifesaver's wife, Speaking of Courage offers an intimate and vivid account through the use of unique glass slides from the early 1900's of what happened when those intrepid ships and their crews met with treacherous New England weather.
This exhibition is made possible by the following sponsors:
The Humane Society of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
National Trust for Historic Preservation
The Boston Marine Society
MASHRAB: Massachusetts State Historic Records Advisory Board
With Special Thanks to Richard Boonisar, donor of the Mary Evelyn Sparrow Glass Slide Collection to the Hull Lifesaving Museum.

During the War of 1812, Rebecca and Abigail Bates were left to care for the Scituate Lighthouse in the absence of their father, the lightkeeper. Having observed a British ship unexpectedly heading into the harbor, these two sisters armed only with a fife and drum, hiding from sight of the approaching troops, frightened away the soldiers of the British warship, La Hogue, fooling the British into thinking that an armed militia was on shore awaiting them.
Based on the “Army of Two” story of the Bates Sisters, this award-winning production, from creator, co-writer, and director Dante D’Amore was filmed entirely on the South Shore with many local actors and musicians. The screening will be followed by conversation with the producer, director and an actor.
Funding from Mass Humanities has been provided through the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) and the National Endowment of Humanities (NEH).
