From: Montclair History CenterCelebrating the Contributions of Frances Mills
The Montclair History Center was saddened to hear of the passing of supporter Frances Mills. Frances was one of the founding members of the Montclair History Center, then the Montclair Historical Society. Frances led the first docent training program at the museum, bringing history to life by leading a team in engagement and public history. Working alongside staff and volunteers, Frances lended expertise to identifying collections for museum exhibit interpretation, managed the newly formed museum store locating unique products, and launched the annual Herb Sale- a tradition and fundraiser that has lasted for over 45 years. Frances was also the co-author of the books Fanny Pierson Crane, Her Receipts and The Thirteen Colonies Cookbook, guides for open hearth and beehive oven cooking in the 18th century. These books are still used for hearth cooking demonstrations in the museum today and sold in our museum store.
Frances was also a longtime member of the Garden Club of Montclair whose members have showcased artfully designed period holiday decorations for over 25 years in the museum. Frances made a significant impact on the Montclair History Center and we are grateful for her dedication to preservation and history. Learn more about Frances' life and lasting legacy here.
