Some Valentine's Day Love for the William Paca House

Love was in the air this week and HA was happy to show some love to one of our hardest working buildings—the William Paca House (1763-65).

Thanks to a planned gift from a donor's estate, we’ve been able to take on some projects during the Paca House's annual winter closure. An amazing team from Universal Floors spent two days scouring the reclaimed wood floors from the 1970s reconstruction, and there will be new oil cloth floor mats for the central passage and porch this spring. Our carpenter, Rocco - one of our star volunteers - made repairs to the front door threshold, and we repaired the dining room runner. The upkeep of this 18th century building that HA stewards for the State and people of Maryland takes constant attention. We are grateful to those who help in this effort so that we can share this cultural resource with you.

Whether it is a gift through your will or retirement plan, a planned gift is one of the most meaningful ways to make a substantial impact on Historic Annapolis. To learn more about the many ways you can support HA, contact Traci Ramsey, Vice President of Advancement, at 410.626.1033 or [email protected].

And the Winner Is...

We are delighted to announce the winners of the Annapolis Love Story Contest: Caitlin and Sam! These two lovebirds will receive a special sweetheart of a prize courtesy of our contest partners. We are so grateful to everyone who shared their love stories with us - there is nothing better than celebrating the boundless amounts of LOVE that can be found in Annapolis!

Virtual Lecture - The Real First President of the United States

Tuesday, February 21

Dr. Glenn F. Williams joins us to explain and answer the question on whether Maryland's own John Hanson, as the first president of the United States under the Articles of Confederation, should or should not be considered the nation's "first president" rather than George Washington.

In addition, it will also present the argument why the federal holiday observed on the third Monday in February is not and should not be called "Presidents 'Day."

Virtual Lecture - Brave Soldier of Fame: Lafayette in Annapolis

Tuesday, February 28

We are pleased to welcome back historian Glenn Campbell for a special virtual lecture!

Lafayette’s time in Annapolis totaled less than a fortnight spread out over five decades, but that was enough for the French nobleman and the city to develop a mutual admiration for one another. The first two times he came to Maryland’s capital in 1777 and 1781, he arrived on a mission; the last two visits in 1784 and 1824 were for pleasure. Former HA Senior Historian Glenn E. Campbell talks about the long and warm relationship between Annapolis and America’s favorite fighting Frenchman.

Advance registration required.

Time: 7 pm (ET)

Location: Zoom Virtual Lecture

Cost: $15 per household for General Admission; $10 per household for HA Members, Military, and HA Docents
