GARDEN TIP FROM GEORGE CHAPMAN

BUSH CLOVER

I had an area in a garden that was so harsh – full sun, poor soil, above a wall, no irrigation – that it laid empty for years. It was suggested to me to try Lespedeza thunbergia, bush clover, here and it worked like a charm!

This plant is an herbaceous shrub that dies back to the ground after a hard frost but can reach a size of six feet tall and eight feet wide in a single growing season. It has long arching branches of blue green foliage that are covered with rosy purple flowers in late summer into fall, a great pollinator when many others have finished for the season.

Weedy and potentially invasive in Midwestern gardens, its toughness makes it a great candidate for those hard to grow areas here in the Northeast!
