From: New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy

During a roughly 15-minute-long tour of the kindergarten program at Maurice Hawk Elementary School in West Windsor, Governor Phil Murphy made appearances in two classrooms to see what day-to-day learning is like for kids in the district.

The first classroom featured nearly a dozen kids with “super reading powers” showing off their skills by reading short sentences for the governor.

Murphy took the time to high five the kids and compliment both the students and their teacher before heading to the next stop of the tour.

That second stop was another full-day kindergarten classroom but this one featured a Mandarin immersion program.

Some of the students are native Mandarin speakers and part of each day includes lessons fully in Mandarin.

Murphy greeted the students in Mandarin and joined them in learning ways to greet one another.

He interacted with many of the students, offering fist bumps and handshakes as part of the lesson.

While walking between destinations, Murphy talked to Superintendent David Aderhold and Principal Sara Bright about the expansion of the school as well as the district makeup and how long full-day programs have been available.
