From: Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKeePROVIDENCE, RI — Following the completion of the Washington Bridge superstructure demolition last week, Governor Dan McKee on March 3rd, announced that the demolition of the bridge's substructure officially began on March 3rd.
“The start of substructure demolition is another sign of progress in our efforts to deliver a brand-new Washington Bridge that will outlast our lifetimes,” said Governor Dan McKee. “As this phase of demolition begins, the procurement process for the rebuild project is moving forward on schedule.”
Substructure demolition work will initially focus on elements of the substructure on land beginning on the East Providence side of the river. Demolition crews will use hammers to break up the old bridge components. This work will be done during the daytime hours only with no overnight hammering planned. Noise and dust controls are in place and will be monitored.
Substructure demolition activity is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
